View original topic: Front Brake Upgrade?

I have stock front brakes. I don't know what exact year they are, because I have been scrounging parts from all over the place. I know they are pre-1966 because it is a link-pin front end.

I want to use the largest wheel cylinder and shoes possible to maximize braking at the front. What should I ask for when I go the parts store to buy new parts?

1965 and 1966 T-1 use the wider front drums and 5 lug wheels.

So if I aks for 65 or 66 wheel cylinders, they are a direct bolt-on to the earlier style backing plate? Is there a picture somewhere I can compare what I have with a known 65/66 to see if I do infact have a 65 front end. I know that it is not 66, because 66 is a ball-joint front end.

I am hoping not to have to buy drums. Can anybody tell me the what the drum measurement should be so that I can verify if the 65-66 shoes will work with the drums that I have?

After a quick browse on the Moore Parts Web Site...

"Front Wheel Cylinder Type 1 58-79" http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/255/611057113B/

Appears that this is a universal Wheel Cyliner which fits all years.

"Front Shoe Set Type 1 58-64"

"Front Shoe Set Type 1 65-76"

The brake shoes on the other change at 1965. What is the differance? What prevents them later style being run on early backing plates?

It is easiest to use the correct backing plates due to the offset of the different off set of the shoes. The smaller the wheel cylinder the more pressure it will exert. It is better explained in the HP book, Building Buggies and Bajas.
