Seems like it might do 'okay' on a baja (turning-wise), but would be rough turning if you did it to a sandrail.
Thoughts?
How about locking differentials on a 091? Edumacate me! |

Never heard of a locking differential for a VW tranny (except the Iltis, but that is a whole different critter). You can get a Peloquin limited slip for an 091/002 (see here: http://www.evwparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=091498006A). That will act like a locker in most circumstances, except actually helping grip through turns on road.
If it is an offroad only car, welding the diff won't be much of a problem. However, if you plan to drive on the street or like to hit 50+ mph offroad, I would go for a limited slip. Much safer, as your turning radius won't change much. It depends largely on the surface. |

The first thing that comes to my mind is what are you going to gain by doing this. I know rock crawlers do it and I can see the reason for doing for that.
Is there some terrain that you are having difficulty getting over stuff there is most likely a better solution or maybe you are using the wrong vehicle.
I honestly cant think of a reason why you should weld it........... |

| I heard the syncro bus has a locking diff ,but I don't know if that's true ,or not. You might want to look into that. |

There is some transaxles, that had limited slip diffs...... It was up on a some site recently...
As for welding it, it guess if you always go in a straight line its ok.... Going to be a little hard to turn corners though....

| if you were to weld the diff it would take all the fun out of a turning/cutting brake. and would want to push in a corner. |

| Plus extra stress on the cv axles, etc. I'd do it in a heartbeat for an all offroad rig, but not something that touches the street. |

Welded one when I was young because the spiders were broken and it got me back on the trail.
It sucked butt. Would not turn worth a crap at slow, medium or high speed. Just not enough weight on the front wheels to bite and turn.
I ran a spool locking the axles on my V8 drag car with 16 X 32 X 15 slicks and had very little problem turning, but the V8 was sitting over the front wheels to give some bite weight. |

| Its a bad idea and if your weld breaks, watch out it is going to get interesting. The turning brake makes a much better limited slip than welding the spider gears. Also on a real steep vertical trail you can apply the upper brake to counter effect gravity. In this case a locked diff will make the rails rear go down the the hill. Now if only ARB made a locker for a VW transaxle. |

| Lower brake? Do you mean emergency brake? |

No I spazed I meant apply the brake that is highest on the hill. The lower wheel will push the rail up to keep it going straight. This works well when the rail is not going fast enough to over come gravity. |

Yea no doubt plus if you get alot of traction sometime while trying to turn and avoid a tree you'll probably go right into it.
You trying to drift offroad?? I hear drifters weld their diffs |

| I know this has came up before and most aggreed that using the turning brakes to balance the power is a much better idea, |

| I've run spools and welded diffs at circle track, drag strips, and on the street (all VW)...but never off road, well besides my mini-sandrail with a go-kart live axle  . |
