My 1972 T2 Camper has just failed its mot due to a worn upper steering bearing. I can't find anywhere that makes them for an early bay, just the 1974 model onwards. Does anyone know where i can get this from??

Many thanks

Welcome, are you referring to the bearing in the steering column?

jodieandleon Tue Sep 15, 2009 11:54 pm

Yes thats correct, any ideas?

is this kind of what you're after?

Thanks for the response. I think it may be, i have emailed the pic to my garage to make sure. Where can i get hold of this?

Ok...that is part # 211-415-585 , I see it listed as up to '67, but it looks exactly like my '73. I believe 211-415-585 B is for '74 and up, but I'm not sure. I find no reference for a 211-415-585 A...

"GermanSupplyScott" would know for sure, as would BusDaddy...

I stole that pic from Cip1.com (yeah sure they're copyrighted)

I sure am glad I don't have to pass MOT inspection over here!

Cheers

Thanks. I am still awaiting a response from my garage. Does anyone know for sure if this part will work?
Many thanks

I'm going out on a limb here....I'm 99% sure you would need the 211-415-585 A.....which you are NOT going to find new. It did exist, and there is one link for it on the web...

Here's a link! (scroll down 70%)

I believe the major difference between the units is the A bearing is insulated to work with the horn circuit. It may fit but you'll have the horn blowing all the time unless you can somehow isolate it from the column tube.

That's what I was wondering....with MOT the horn has to work, Properly!

Well they say... Quote: HORN

• Operation.
• Control should be easily reached by the driver.
• Volume must be sufficiently audible to pedestrians and other vehicles.
• The tone should not consist of a sequential multi-tone.

I sure am glad I register Bessie in a "Rural" county!

Thanks for all your help. We have a separate horn button on our van already and the original horn is redundant so i am hoping this means it should work.

Well Leon/Jodie you will let us know.....no?

Since you are not actually doing this repair, I would send a link (of this thread) to your mechanic...he/she might understand the differences...;)

Cheers

Well we have finally got round to getting the bearing fitted to our van. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit, it is approx 2mm too small. The style is exactly what we need (shown in the picture), we just need one which is a little bigger. If anyone has any ideas on where I can find this I would really appreciate it… we are running out of ideas now so all are welcome.
Many thanks

C'mon 73kombi, I mean... you've got his damned bridge. The least you could do is give him the right part number.

In addition to the earlier suggestions, maybe give Busted Bus a shout http://www.bustedbus.com/ for a good used unit.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the tip, i have emailed them and will wait and see if they can help. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

I note 73Kombi has been banned so he probably won't be responding to this thread.

okay, I'll go out on a limb here...back in some earlier days I was working on an ole chevy truck, like 49, and I couldn't afford all the parts it needed. There was this old guy that was staying in the same boarding house, who used to come out and talk to me while I was tinkering away...when he saw all the slop in the steering column, he said get a piece of hard wood and size it to fit the column, then bore a hole thru it for the shaft. I still do this today, on my 62 baja, a morris minor, and my 45 chevy. truck...I use white oak, that I also milled myself...with a chain saw...

Irate, Do you then lube it with beeswax or something similar?

iratehippie Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:36 pm

I used grease, wax would work...woods like locust and teak have natural oils make them really slick.
