Many women tell you that?

Yes this is particularly annoying, I've had to ask where someone was, I could have solved their problem easily with a short visit, but I didn't know where they were. If you don't want to post a location with you avatar, tell us where you are in the thread if you want someone to drop by and help.

I agree there is no harm in providing a general location or, in most cases, an exact city.

Preferably in your profile so it automatically appears without extra effort.

If someone posted on this site and I noticed that they were in my State and I may be able to help them I would PM them to see if they needed some help. If they did, we could be PM each other without others knowing and possibly help another in need.

Entering your State you reside in is not an evasion of your privacy!

You sound like the typical right-winger who wants to nose into everyone else's business.

Not your call, buddy. You can always PM me if you want to deal in person or by email. Otherwise I'm anonymous and unlocatable. Deal with it.

Keep it civil and don't drag political aspersions into this discussion.

I can respect your right to remain private. The problem occurs when someone asks for help. I'm not going to PM everyone with a problem that has an anonymous location to find out where they are located. If one requests technical help it would be nice to know a general location. I have seen anonymous location posters that needed to borrow a specialty tool. A location would be useful in this instance.

x2

Maybe there should be a "special" forum where only people who use their real names are allowed. I find it irritating, go to a VW show and meet some guy "Hey, I'm Jeff. I know you from thesamba". "Really?" "Yeah, I'm 'boogerboy'".

If you introduce yourself to me in person by a name other than what you use on thesamba, then no, I don't "know you from thesamba".

I can understand the privacy thing, but what are you hiding from exactly???

John Moxon Fri Sep 18, 2009 10:27 am

Needless to say I agree with John.

When I started my Judson website nearly 10 years ago I made a conscious decision to be as open as possible. There was a general trend at the time to anonymity on The Internet (there still is) and to me it discourages the exchange of information about the subject I was interested in opening up.

I made an "About Us" page which I though would make us more approachable in what was very much a minority interest. Having said that I perhaps gave away too much information at the time but since the growing concern of identity fraud, I've reduced what I though might make me more vulnerable. As long as you're careful with what you disclose I can't see the need for secrecy.

I'm happy with the decision to use my own name.

You aren't.

A few minutes spent with some clever Googling and you can find out stuff about people, especially those who have "lots of tracks" all over the internet, including where they live. Couple that with people/address look up services, real estate service sites, GoogleEarth/maps, and you are not as "hidden" as you might think, especially if someone wants to find out stuff about you. Most likely I can get an ariel view of your backyard and tell you what you paid in taxes to your town last year.

That is the age we live in..... deal with it.
