I watch this thread for some time now and am very fascinated by this Rometsch Porsche race car.
And now: Looking through old photographs in the internet I found these pics showing the Rometsch at the Leipziger Stadtparkrennen in 1954, driven by Helmut Niedermayr from the Renngemeinschaft Berlin. There were no descriptions but I am quit sure.
There are so many lost treasures out there...

The front rims appear to be drilled 16"VW... rather than 16" 356 slotted like on the rear.

These wheels were on Porsche chassis #10821. Cheers! 8)

Was these holes made by the owner or was this Porsche delivered with it when new?

I've seen a similar set of rims on a Norwegian beetle from 1950.

I have a set of these drilled rims... Kind of cool. I am saving them for a future project.

Notice that they are from 1949... yet they are 15" rather than 16" ... and they are also pretty wide for the time... 4 inch. They are Lemmerz brand and the holes appear to be punched with some sort of spiraling punch.

Finally: the Rometsch Porsche Spyder just came back from the paint shop. Now we are reassembling the car for its first presentation at the RETRO CLASSICS in Stuttgart, Germany (March 12 till 14, 2010).

It was really hard work to explain the guy at the paint shop to paint the car in such a way that you still can see the original body lines with all the rivets on it and not to put bondo on them. But finally here you can see it close to its final state:

How did you identify the actual color of the "cross-stripe" on the car? I thought previous information indicated that it was dark red / burgundy for the Berlin-team?

We have an original information by the O.N.S. (Supreme Sports Authority for German Motor Transport) from 1951 regarding the detection stripe on the hood. It sais that sports cars up to 1100 cc must have a black stripe (width: 12 cm) for better overview at all races. Signal red signalised up to 2000 cc, bleu royal up to 1500 cc, Schweinfurther green up to 750 cc and yellow with a black border up to 500 cc.

A color sample was attached.

For what years was this requirement valid? Would it also apply to a race in 1955 that all cars needed this class-color coding?

I am heartsick with nostalgia! I was born in Munich and my father owned new 356's in 1959, 60, and 61. My mother made him stop when I was born. In '97 I told her she had to let him buy a porsche again since we were all grown up and moved out! Your restoration, research and photos are beautiful. I don't think I can take the heartache anymore!! But please keep posting more, I can't get enough :D

In the early 1950s the regulation was strictly established, but in the mid 50s more and more teams did not comply with this regulation. The colors still kept their meaning.
