I know what you are thinking. Another post on widening steel wheels. I have some 4.5" Wide Sprints that I want to widen to 6". I did search on the Samba and found many covering the subject however I never saw a post detailing options on what wheels you can use for the hoop replacements. The only VW hoops I have found locally are the usual 5.5" wide. What kind of modern 15" steel wheels can be used as donor material for the 6" hoop? Are the hoops available 'stand-alone" :?:

On a final note what is the widest tire I can safely run on a 5.5 Wide rim :?:

Thanks

You can give these guys a call... http://www.boltonsclassicwheels.com/ or these guys.... http://www.stocktonwheel.com/ They might be able to answer your question.

As for tire size check out http://www.tirerack.com/index_w.jsp They give a range on what tire fits what rim. I have a 215/70 on a 5.5 in rim.

Shano63....I am not naive.....Like I stated in my post I researched and I already know what you are telling me. In fact I have already contacted them. I would like to know if anyone out there that has "DIYd" this modification can shed some light on what junkyard "hoops" will work??

Sorry dude, was just throwing some stuff out there for you. Next time I'll think twice.

If you had actually contacted Bolton and Stockton, which I seriously doubt that you have? They would Tell you what hoops they use!

Yeah you are right Mike I freaking lied!!!! I only contacted Stockton....to much of a turn around time so I figured I would do this myself. Thanks for your helpful insight........

You're wasting time! Get the centers of your wheels cut out and in the mail to Bolton/Stockton with your specifications. It might take forever to find junkyard hoops? :D

Still doing it myself....I am an aerospace machinist/welder. All I need is the hoops. I figured someone had gone the same route utilizing a modern car 15" diameter steel wheel with equivalent inner diameter as a VW hoop.

Perhaps maggiolino, when someone goes out of their way to attempt to answer your question according to what they understand your question to be, you might consider not coming across like a dick when you reply. A simple "thanks, but what I'm looking to do is..." or "let me clarify what I'm looking for..." or "I've already tried to contact..." would be better received. On your original post you only mention "researching" Samba, not anyone else; so how was shano to know that you had already contacted the two vendors? It seems you got a little panty-hurt when he made the crazy presumption that your custom wheel project question might have been better answered by custom wheel builders.
Two folks tried to help/suggest avenues... it seems you don't want help. Maybe it's too much for your aerospace, machinist/welder, astronaut, "I can weld wood" pride to handle asking for other's help on a public forum... Good luck Buzz. 8)

Apologies to all.. :P  I did not mean to come across aggressively and hurt feelings. :? But it’s in my blood. You see I am extremely proud because I am a MILITARY aerospace welder/machinist with over twenty years experience working on military aircraft (F-111, F-15E, F-117A, F-16G, B-1s, etc.) I am sorry if my arrogance has upset you. I will keep it in check next time I post a dumb-ass question on the samba.
P.S. Yes I can probably weld wood while we are bullshitting!!! :D

OK now that apologies have been made can we please get back on the subject?
I looked at a GM rim tonight and I think it might just work. If it does I will post on here and show my work.
Cheers……….

IF YOUR CENTERS ARE 13 1/4 IN DIAMITER. CHEVY PICKUP RALLY WHEELS, THE 8 INCH WIDE ONES NOT THE 7 INCH WIDE ONES ARE SUSPOSE TO FIT . CHECK OUT FORD MUSCLE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT ON THE WEB. THAT IS WHAT THEY USE

That's some funny shite!!! I wish I could use all the toys/tools at my disposal. If Uncle Sam even thought I was using any of the 5th axis machining centers, water jet, lathes, etc, etc to make parts for my ride he would send me straight to the jailhouse at Ft Leavenworth but not before demoting me in rank of course...

VOLKSWAGNUT Mon Oct 05, 2009 12:34 pm

I use GM small truck, (2wd S10, Sonoma), or also use the small van M series (Astro, Safari, 2wd), for hoops. CHEAP CHEAP at the junk yard.

Like these..

hey volkswagnut what kind of centers are you putting in those chevy rims

maggiolino basso Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:04 pm

I found some 7" Wide steel Chevy Sonoma wheels. Is 7" too aggressive for stock set-up? I want to run 205 tires and do not want any rubbing on the inside or the fender.

toy man Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:24 am

take a look on the herbie web site there is loads of info about what size fits. what kind of centers are you using.
