hello,
new here and love the site! Lots of good info!!
My question is a friend has a 1972 VW formula vee and I was wondering if they formula vee came in standard and super? All I can see is the stripe on the bottom of the car and other little things. Im not anywhere near it to see the front suspension so would any of you know?
Thanks! |

Standard front end only. No place on a Formula V to mount struts.

You could be right. Formula Vee is associated with open wheel racing. I was unaware of the Formula Vee stock Beetle. |

| Well, they were dealer options, so I think it depended on the Dealer as to what cars they set up that way. |

They can't be all Supers, as the option package came out in model year 1970... before Super Beetles existed. Check out this link:

I'm aware of the Sun bug and the Jeans bug which were both factory produced -- are there others? Somehow adding a stripe, Riviera wheels and a shift knob to stock bug don't do much for me.
Ok - did a quick search:

I like the gold Sun Bug with tan cordory seats and the sport wheels. |

| Formula Vee package was all dealer add on. You could go from as simple as just the tape stripe or the full package with wheels, guages, fresh air scoop, wood grained dash, shifter options, flared tail pipes, fog lights, bumper overriders and etc. |

Yeah, my 1970 is a Standard Formula Vee...but I'm beginning to think that the dealer just slapped the stickers on any old Type 1 they wanted, hah.
But I'm no purist...I'm sure Supers are welcome, too! |

This is exactly the case. Dealers simply added accessories onto a car taken out of stock. They didn't leave the factory as a "Formula Vee" is is simply a dealer installed option or options. |

Just not sure if they came in standard or super or both. thanks ..........................................................................................................hi i worked at two vw dealers in the 1960s 1970s... the formula vee bug kits came out in 1966 the 1966 and 1967 bugs had only a stripe kit that had the letters FV then a number 1300 0r 1500 ..looked like this FV1300... in 1968 vw went all out on the formula vee kits ...there was a wooden streering wheel... wooden dash knobs ...wooden dash inserts formula vee shifters ...formula vee seat covers formula vee tack ..the out side of the bug had formula vee mag wheels the strongest wheel ever made for a vw bug ...they were made of aluminum magnesium beryllium titanium alloy light weigh and very strong wheel ..we allso put on fan fair horns bumper guards hood scoop frount ...there was allso a rear hood scoop on the 1968 bugs..taper exhausts tips .and .on the rear engine lid there was a formula vee decal then it was... changed to a formula vee emblem in 1970 ...then the new stripe kit that said formula vee ..and stone guards ...i think its kind of strange that after all these years people are wanting to know about the formula vee bugs ..no one cared about them all these years vw trends vw greats and hot vws would not even put them in there mags ..now thanks to the UK guys there comming back strong the mag wheels are now going for $300.00 to $500.00 3 years ago i could buy them for $100.00 a set take care spencerfvee |

Thanks for all the info, Spencer...since you seem to have a pretty good memory for the Vees, do you happen to remember exactly where the metal badge is supposed to live on the car? You said on the rear of the car, but did it replace the Volkwagen script, or was it located below that? I acquired a NOS badge, and i would like it to look authentic.
I also purchased a pretty rare set of those mag wheels from a Porsche 914 enthusiast for a decent price. They are a bit beat up, but polished up nicely. They are quite a bit different from other "Riviera" wheels i've seen, since they have smooth spokes, unlike the reproductions.
Even if the Formula Vees are not a "true" special edition, I still really like the understated style (except maybe the faux wood and external chrome horns! blegh!) :)
Cheers,
J. |
