You bus turned out so nice. You did an incredible job on the bus as well as your documentation of the process through pictures and descriptions/explanations. I spoke with you on here back in the spring and you've gotten a lot done since then. I am impressed. I also have a 1970 Westy but a tintop. I still need to take pics but I have not gotten that much done other than sourcing and buying a few parts here and there. I want to get her driving before I do all the paint etc. Then I can at least move it around to make working that much easier. So, I've been reading everything I can find on these busses, researching online and deciding what direction I want to go. I believe I am going to build a stroker over the winter and continue buying parts for all the things needing immediate attention to be safely road worthy. I need to re-do all the brakes including master cylinder, get fresh tires, repair the knock in the steering. Tie rods, ball joints, possibly the steering box and then I won't know the condition of the transaxle till I can drive it. I've learned a lot from what you have shared about your bus restoration.

Thanks for all the motivation through this project guys. My goal was simply to learn as much as I could about the Bay while rebuilding it. The wife, dog and I camped in it overnight in the backyard last week. It was great, probably the last mild night here in Minnesota. I was a bit bummed out by the matress, as it was very firm and I ended up "rotating" sides every 1/2 hr or so. I'll be trying a foam/air mattress in addition to the mattress next time to see how that helps.
I didn't want to get insurance on it till spring, as MN's camping season is just about done. I look forward to getting it on the open roads next spring!!

Happy Camping!!!

Is there a reason you went with the later mattress? The earlier ones are thicker and would also be more "appropriate" for such a fine looking bus. Nice work.

Nice job on the resto, I'm curious, where did you get the mid sized emblem for the front? Or did it come with the spare nose?
Again, good job.

When I bought the bus it came with the late bay front seats with headrests, and only the rear bench backrest cushion. I like the plaid interior and found a local mattress set at a good price. You're right though, the early foam would be a lot more comfortable.

I think the emblem came from Busdepot. It is plastic though, but it works for now. I adheard it with two sided emblem tape, as I didn't like the plastic clips it came with.

You could meet halfway... go with the early foam covered in the later plaid. I think someone on here sells the fabric. That would be an interesting hybrid.

Hopefully as soon as I get mky under slider rocker in the mail I will be replacing this panel also. Do you have any more detailed shots of how you welded in the top to underneath the slider.? :?:

Goodwork man!

Al Hurst,

Yeah, your drivers side sure looks like mine did. You probably saw Gerson's post:

Quote: driver's side rocker, with cheater seam, done and on sale now...6in high $55.00
Nice price and good quality. If the 6" doesn't cut it in some areas, you can patch in some metal to make it work. (the panel gets pretty straight at the 6" mark)

I don't have any more pictures when I was welding in the passenger side rocker.
