I guess here is a nice place to keep a chronicle of my adventures into playing with a bug. I will be updating this thread as progress is made. It might be a slow start. I am in the final semester of school and need not lose focus so close to the finish line. Be patient.

I plan on making this a stock looking speedster over the next year or two. I will begin by installing a motor that came with the car but was not installed. I am slowly going to redo the interior and exterior as money allows. It is always fun to read other's adventures, so I hope that you guys have fun reading mine.

I will start with a few pictures of the car as it is now. The custom paint job was free. I am so lucky.

There is no timeline as of yet. This is something to get me away from the computer and allow me some stress relief. Besides, beer always taste better in the garage, right?

Decided to make a link for the pictures. I will update as changes are made.

Thank god I took this picture. As I was looking over the thread I noticed that my engine stand (no one has to remind me how STUPID it was to place the engine on a plastic set of steps) was about to collapse. Look at the front right leg to see what I mean.

Lookin' good, keep us updated.

Not related, but one of my friends is a Juggalette, or however you spell it.

Looks like it's in pretty good shape, actually. And hey... you've got a windshield washing fluid tank in the trunk! I've been lacking one of those in my '73 Super since I bought it, five years ago. :P

Good luck. Try not to let the beetle distract you from classes!

I've got one, you need it? I'm strapped for cash, so $100 plus $100 shipping

Haha, I'll have to pass. I've gotten along just fine without it all these years. I usually just use the squeegee at the gas station. :P

looks like tonight I decided to make this a type 4 project. I like the idea of more reliability and more power. Any of you kids around here putting type 4's in your beetles?

Seems like a relatively easier way to build HP without sacrificing reliability. The type 1's have their limits before the cost get to be a little much. If you get radicle with any engine, you can blow cost out of the water, but there seems to be a greater gain in going with a 2.0L or 2.3L type 4 vs trying to get a type 1 in the 2000 cc club.

Just 1 in another string of ideas.

talk to jake raby if you really want to put a sweet type 4 with an upright kit. bring you wallet.

of course, nothing wrong with a good ol single port if its a solid runner

i would love to have one of the Raby type 4 motors, but I do not have that type of budget. I will be doing this one myself.

Hey - nice project! We're in the same state, be sure and let us know if you need any parts.

Know anyone in colorado springs looking to get rid of a Type 4 motor?

greggearhead Fri Oct 02, 2009 5:53 am

A builder or a runner?

I'll be getting rid of my 1700 from the panel van as soon as I build up a 2400 from a 2.0 builder. I might have a lead on another 2.0 builder as well. Where are you located?

one4house Fri Oct 02, 2009 4:19 pm

Builder. I am in Colorado Springs

So I took advantage of a beautiful 70 degree day and disassembled my bug. I removed the fenders, hood and the other lid.....whatever you want to call it. lol.

I had a few of the fender bolts that broke off, and there were quite a few that were broken off the last time someone had the fenders off. What can I do about replacing those? I had one fender that was only held on by 3 bolts.

In the front I have 2 bolts that come out with the square nut that is inset into the body. Where can I find me some of those?

Here are some pictures of my baby with some of her clothes off:

Thanks for the link. That will help with some of the bolts that I am missing, but I am also in need of the inserts that the bolts screw into. I also need some information about removing the inserts that have broken bolts in them.

I do appreciate the link. That solves one of my problems.

And as quickly as it began it ended. I decided to part her out. There are a few things that I would rather not deal with. I know that there is satisfaction in knowing that did it yourself, but I do not have the tools or the space at this point in my life to start a frame-off project. I have decided to part her out and buy something that needs a little less work.

If you are on the need of any parts, let me know. The link to the post is here.

If you are interested in a complete turnkey motor, I have the info and video of it running here:

I will be back with another one in the next 3 months. This was just a little more than I needed right now.

sorry it had to end for you. that motor sounds like its a strong runner..

dont you want to hang on to it for the next body you may pick up?
