I've decided that my baja needs a new wiring harness. The lights have been weird since I got it and now today I found out I have to keep the battery disconnect cuz my headlight switch keeps smoking. I've searched and seems the ez wiring kit is good for the money. Question is, for those who have used it, what problems did you run into? Were you able to use keep the factory switches? Just looking for any heads up before I dive into this. Thanx

It is better to use the factory harness with the correct colors so the VW wiring diagram can still be used. Run one or two seperate 8 guage power wire for aux lights, amps, stereos. Use a relay for the driving lights.

After calming down and really thinking about it, I agree, I'll just stick with the stock harness. The only things not hooked up are the horn and back up lights. It would be a lot less work just fixing whats wrong. Anyways, what would cause the actual headlight switch to smoke? Is it possible the switch came apart inside and is grounding itself out?

The horn button is only supposed to supply a ground to the horn. Look at the wiring diagrams in the technical section of the Samba.

Oops, meant what would cause the headlight switch to smoke.

It could be it falling apart or you have a short to ground. Disconnect the wires to the lights one at a time.

Stress, peer pressure? Do any of the other switches smoke? It may just be trying to fit in and be noticed.

I'm about ready to start smoking again. Got a new switch, plugged it back in and when I twist the knob for the dimmer, smoking again. So I know its not the switch. Could the relay be at fault? Any ideas on where to start looking? I checked the wires and they all seem fine. Thanx for any input.

Ya, so, nevermind. Got it figured out.

What was it? The hot shorting out?

Just had some wires crossed. It had the round early style switch on it and the one I got was the square late style. Found a diagram and connected the wires in the right spots. Felt like a total doof. Now its on to the brake light switches, if it stops raining here that is.

That's easy to do. Don't get down on yourself.

Thanx man. Wiring has always been something I've shyed away from, but you gotta learn sometime, right?
