This was in Hot Rod a few years ago. I didn't think it looked that bad for a $50.00 dollar paint job.

My bus is currently drying from its Ace brand Rust-stop paint job. while I have never used rustoleum paint before, only thier primers, but they appear quite similar to rust stop. slightly rubbery while dring, long dry time, etc. I whent with Ace cause its cheap, avialable, and if you pick a real color youcan get a spray can of it later to touch it up. I sprayed it, super easy, and if you can rent a gun for 50 bucks plus compressor, do it that way and be done in 4 coats. Took me 2 or 3 hours to go from masked off to final paint, minimal effort. My recepie;
3 parts paint
1 part Naptha paint thinner
1 cap full of japan drier (rust stop dries sloooooow, this helped hugely)
I had some hardener, but I wussed out on trying it and just used the japan drier. they sell it at ace as well. I didnt use much of it, slightly less than reccomended as it can discolor light colors and i was painting a light green. only 2 runns, my first time using this gun. tiny and will buff out. Ace paint isn't super shiny when it hits the car but it buffs up super quick, so don't worry about that. Next time I will experiment w/ hardener, that is supposed to make it shiney er. |

| Rustoleum, to me, is a brand of spray paint that you can get at the local hardware store. In what form and where do you get it for painting a bus? Cans? Auto body supply store? Online? How much does it take to do a bus? |

Exactly, one-in-the-same. The "rolling on Tremclad" thread covers all this. Interesting read too. I would be beat up by saying this in that thread, but IMHO is still believe if (a) you do all the body work and prep yourself to minimize some cost, that (b) a decent, but non show quality, professionally applied paint job would provide better protection and probably look better. :shock:
That's not to say that those who have done it, haven't done an AWESOME job, most look far better than my bus. Just not the route I'm going with mine. |
