Sounds like the show outgrew its venue. Time to look for a bigger location.

Preregistration works for Kelly Park-it may be a good idea as well as forecasting/predicting larger crowds year after year.

It is definately never a good idea to run short on food/drink though even at a party you are throwing at your house let alone an event which you are hoping people stay the whole day in the nice sunshine.

DKK Wed Jun 16, 2010 9:31 am

Pre-Registration sounds like a good idea but...

I've run a car show with preregistration. We had to go this way because the venue we had maxxed out at 130 cars and we had to account for each space. We would get somewhere between 100 to 140 prereg each year. On years we were short, we'd allow day of show entries. On years we were over it was 1st come.

Just doing it for 130 cars was a paperwork nightmare. I can only imagine the disaster it would cause for a show the size of The Classic.

You guys are complaining now about how long it takes to get in with the present system. IMHO it would be much worse with prereg.

Just my 2 cents.

BTW The DHK crew was awesome! Friendly and efficient. I enjoyed talking w/ a couple of you guys. It's great to see the passion and respect for the hobby

Fil Wed Jun 16, 2010 1:02 pm

The show was great, the Cars were awesome (did anyone have any doubt), the DHK Crew made sure all those cars got IN, to begin with, as for food we brought our own, we had BBQ, Carne Asada and chicken. No DOUBT biggest show of the year thus far.

Great job for ALL involved in the TRUE VW CLASSIC EVENT.
Vendors, participants, VW Clubs, Classic and Original Cars.
Awesome people at every corner of the show!!!

what happened to your bus? i saw her going out on a stretcher...

First time to the classic..The swap area was very large..Very cool..
Arrived a little late so didn't see any of the problems with entrance that others had..
Had a good time..Thanks to all who put it on..

Many thanks to all my crew, The Hansens, The Hawaiians, VTO, Bugorama and to all of you who give your time.

X2 on both counts! 8)

BTW, I would not believe the VTO twins were there helping out on top of also helping organize AND run the BlackStar campout, if I had not seen it myself!

Honestly...when did those two sleep?!?
(and I really wanted to smack those guys who were yelling at one of them about the swap area. They were truly working to get problems sorted out and it was misplaced anger.)

Also, kudos and thanks for the toy and lit show Ed. It was exhausting, but WOW what a turnout!

Next time, we'll get there earlier for the Classic. Turns out 5:45 am isn't early enough.(we forgot the alarm) But, may I suggest more signage at the entrance? I just read that swappers were supposed to be in a different line than show cars? We saw no signs telling us where to go and when we asked someone wearing a Bugorama shirt, he didn't know either.

And food. Seriously focus on food. We would have made a concerted effort to pick up stuff the night before but the last time we were at the Classic (about 5 years ago) it wasn't a problem. But we survived.

Oh, and next time, don't put our swap space within view of someone selling toys. My kids drove me nuts!!!

All in all, glad we went. We had a great time. Thanks to all who were obviously up waaaay earlier than is humane for all their efforts!

Possibly need more room but i am sure you are working on that.

Is there a show winners result posting some where on the net for the Classic?

kidvintage Wed Jun 16, 2010 7:24 pm

The only logical solution to the long entry wait and mad scramble every Classic is to open the gates sooner. If the gates opened at 3 or 4 AM, then there would be a steady trickle going inside and there would be more time to park cars in the proper categories. You would have the hardcore people going in at 3 or 4, the hardcore poeple who may have partied a little too hard the night before rolling in around 5 or 6, and the casual people rolling in after that.

Makes no sense having all those people waiting outside the gate for multiple hours.

Thousands of people @ $20 a head....money should not be an issue. Pay a little extra if you have to, but open the gates sooner and lessen the stress for everyone (especially the volunteers).

There will be eventually.

Fil Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:48 am

Yeah Keldog, i took the strecher LIMO ride home, one of my carbs was leaking gas and I had a couple guys check it out, they said I needed to remove the carb to fix the problem. Did not want to stress anybodies day, so it was more convenient just to LIMO ride home. I'll get it back on the road this weekend.

jhicken Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:16 pm

I had a fantastic time at the show, hell I won't be back to Jersey until tomorrow night! The swap was huge, the show was fantastic, and the weather complimented both nicely. Having ran and produced many shows myself, I know what goes into organizing alot of volunteers. My hat is off to you guys. Pre-registration is a nice concept, but it won't work for a show like this. Kelly Park is different because everyone knows how limited the show area is so they know to pre-register. It's also basically a stock vintage show so it attracts a different type of crowd.

Could things like the sprinklers, the treasure hunt for dash plaques, or the lack of food vendors be improved, sure, but all in all I had a fantastic time and I'll be there again next year. Oh yea, as for the long lines, that's a tradition. Back in the day our club would either camp out the night before, or be down there by 4-5am to get a spot in line so when the gates open at 7a, we would be one of the first ones in. Like a new Star Wars movie, or i-phone, the hard core are the ones who win.

For those who think it's played out, or has run it's course, I disagree. When events like this go away, so will our hobby. If you think you can do it better, step up and help. Contact the promoters with solutions and help make it even better.

My old club [DKK] as there in force with some prime parking. These are guys I used to run with 25+ years ago and every time I see them it makes me even more passionate about our cars. Next year I'm gonna try to figure out a way to bring a car with me

JERSEY REPRESENTS!!!

So again, cheers to the folks who made this all happen, don't let the haters get you down and look for the big guy with the Jersey plates next year, probably parked with my old DKK brothers!
