Answered in the original post...... OY!, so I used my rear defogger switch, WTF it never worked anyways, perfect!

Definitely an old topic but I'm doing the same conversion so,

Busdaddy, (or anyone else that has experience with a BN2)

I've been working on a similar conversion. I finally received a new glow plug so I hooked everything up to day and sure enough it fired up. Thats where I think I have an issue.

It fires up but the voltage to the glow plug always stays around 4 or 5 volts. Isn't suppose to drop back to zero once it ignites? Or does it take a few minutes? I ran it for 3 minutes and it still had voltage but outside temp is just 35 today.

Upon shutting of the switch it does continue to run like it should but the blower motor speed picks up considerably. To me this would be because the glow plug is no longer pulling juice.

So what do you think is the plug not shutting off?

The quartz thermo rod may need to be adjusted while running. It heats up and expands shutting the glow plug off, when lit and in running mode. When it cools it turns the pump off causing the fan to get all the amps and making the faster running sound.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure.... if it runs on when you shut the switch off the quartz rod thermo switch has already done it's thing properly. I'd look for a glow wire in the wrong spot on the switch or a stuck contact in the switch.
It should pick up speed like you're hearing after a few minutes all by itself even with the switch still on as long as it's burning.

Dosent the quartz expansion shut the plug off?

It should, at the same time it activates the cooldown run on feature, one switch/2 actions, either cooldown or glow.

Thats where I was going. Eithor the switch is out of wack-adjustment, or its broke like you said or maybe the quartz rod is cracked.

busdaddy-is yours the later meetering pump type?

Yes, but I have some early ones too.

As for the switch not shutting off the glow if the rod was cracked it wouldn't go into run on mode either so I suspect wiring or a stuck contact.
You can adjust the switch to trip at room temp for testing (count turns to set it back after), listen for the tiny click.

That's for a BN-4 but the concept is the same. Before you go messing with the switch too much confirm the pump is producing the correct number of cc's per minute first, if it's not the heater may not be warming up enough to close the switch (but why does it run on? :? ), hmmm...
