I first posted this in late bug forum, but being a street baja with bigger tires, I am looking for another perspective
My baja is getting 11-14 mpg
I built the motor using all new bearings and old parts (crank, cam, wore out lifters, rockers, sp heads)
new 1600 pistons and cylinders
the carb is a wore out brosol 30 pict 1
009 distributor with points
j-tubes on the stinger
super light weight (2 poly seats, 30' steel reinforcement, fiberglass kit)
the car starts great, almost on first revolution; sometimes it "rats out" and sputters and pops, sometimes it purrs; depends on the weather. It has nice power and runs great...just gets disgusting mileage
thank you for help ideas and thoughts

Start with a good tune up, valves, timing, clean your carb.
Not sure about your carb/distributor combo, but I've gotten upper 20's with an SVDA/34-3/1600 combo and 235's on my Baja. I'm sure the open cab doesn't help on yours, I imagine it'd be like dragging a bucket through a pool. Well, maybe not THAT bad.
Good luck, keep us posted.

thanks
history::father and son project...son rolled it in 2 weeks
I had to cut the rear off to get the engine out, the roof has at least 3 creases in it. I gave the poor little bug a 'second' chance at life.
I also drive it pretty hard in the short drive to work and around town...city driving never helps mileage.
didn't myth busters disprove the no tailgate theory, so my bug should have good down pressure with nice air bubble filling the cockpit  |
