Picked up a new project today. Its a 63 gulf blue bug with a touch of patina and its share of rust. I traded a S10 i've had for a couple years for it. After owning 8 other bugs and buses, all later model, i finally rounded up an earlier model for a project. I'll post up more pics as soon as i can along with some pics of the goodies that came with it.

One more quick pic before the real work begins. We had to install the front beam and get some rollers on it before we tow barred it to the house. There is still some OG gulf blue hiding under the light blue and black resprays. Tomorrow I'm hauling it to the car wash for a good degreasing and to play with some Easy off to see if it'll strip some of the black rattle can off.

Cool 63. Hope it turns out to be a good restoration project!

Today we made it to the carwash with the bug. A couple before pics:

Two cans of Easy Off oven cleaner, 1 gallon of degreaser, 3 brillo pads, and probably 20 bucks in quarters later:

A little wet sanding and most of the purple should be gone as well as the light blue. The rear fenders go from brown to red to black to purple. Up next is some 1000 grit and a buffer and if im not happy with that, a quickie clear job.

That's about a 200 percent improvement! Lookin good man.

Finally got a little time today to start cleaning on the engine. Its a '66 1300. Still need to round up a Alt and stand for the 12V conversion. It has a 12V Gen, but for simplicitys sake, I'm going to run the alternator. We got the tin off the motor and spent some time with a wire brush cleaning on the head and cooling fins.

Here's what we started with.

It wouldn't mount on the engine stand, so I guess sitting on it is close enough.

Some good sludge to remove.

Progress thus far.

Started cleaning on the intake with a wire brush in a die grinder. This is the before shot.

Still more cleaning, wirebrushing, and painting to go. I'll try to post more pics later tonight along with some pics of the 30/31 carb, 009, sunroof clip and other stuff.

I love 63's so much. Looks like it'll be a fun project, good luck!

Made some more progress today. Got the intake painted. I cleaned it using the wire brush, then primed it using aerosol primer. since it looks like to og paint was a gray of some sort, I dug through my stash and found a can of Duplicolor New Ford Gray engine paint. it looks a little blue in the pic.

A couple pics of some of the other goodies.
The sunroof clip. I'll post a pic of the mechanism later with the Golde handle.

The rear clip.

First off nice score... Second i am not a tree hugger by any means but i used to wash my jeep (back in high school) in one of those quarter jobbys after we would go mudding, and the guy used to flame me for "cloging up his drains with mud" i can't imagine what he would say if he cought me using oven cleaner and washing old paint down them haha..
back to the topic at hand..
Good luck with it and the clip.. should be fun

The guy running the car wash is actually the person who sold me my first 70, so he was as enthused about the project as me. Besides, the paint just adds to the lead, mercury, and PCB already in our water system...Government says you can have one meal out of the river a week before your urine glows in the dark  . Thanks for the comments and check back.

Great project and I'm lovin how many pics you are posting. The original paint looks good as well. Good luck!

Still making some progress. I'm still working on cleaning the grime off of the engine and the cooling tin. Dawn Power Dissolver is great for degreasing in those hard to get to place. It also strips paint pretty well. I got a Bosch alternator from Matthew and dropped it off to be rebuilt and got a key made for the ignition switch.

So the work continues. The 1300 is on its way to being reassembled and almost ready to go in. still got some work to do, but its gettin there.

The quarters had some damage that almost looked like it had the rear bumper pulled off or had fell off of some jack stands. I decided to do a quick fix on this and patch it later when i start the body work.

Still have to finish welding it up but at least the engine will have something to seal to for now. This will all be cut out later and replaced the right way.

I also rounded up a 65 for parts. the car has a nice hood, adjustable beam, 4 good wheels and better rear fenders, plus a good bit of patch metal that i need. The car looks way better than it is. doors are trash pretty well, no floor pans, package shelf, and the pillars and channels are gone.

Bump....Any progress? Im in Rome too and I understand you work with matthew.

eguti66 Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:17 pm

are the door window vent visor's in good shape form the 65? if so you want to get rid of them

RomanBug Fri Mar 05, 2010 1:03 am

I actually live in Lindale off of Booze Mountain. Progress has been pretty slow lately, the 65 parts car has been soaking up the heat in the garage for a couple weeks, but a good portion of it got its final trip to Terrys today off of rockmart highway. I can see concrete again now, so maybe the 63 will find its way back into the garage now. next time you and matthew get together get him to give me a holler, id like to check out the vert and this super solid oval ive heard about.

eguti66, ill check out the vent visors soon as i can and let you know.

vw57drvr Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:06 pm

Well I guess you know I live near Matthew in Silver Creek. we are about to get the vert out of hibernation so I can take her to some shows, so it wont be long.

67dub Sat Mar 06, 2010 1:38 pm

You get anything done on that car? or are you doing like the rest of us and just collecting parts? :)
