Is there a commonly known place that the fan hits or drags on, on a non doghouse shroud?
When I rev the engine at idle, I hear a high pitch squeal and it gets louder the as rpms increase.
I got out, very gently pulled the shroud back and the noise increased. |

| is your shroud loose? if you push it one way and the noise gets worse then you must be able to go in the other direction and the noise would stop. |

| Play around with the shims between generator and the back plate. I chased this occasional rub problem around for a while and all it needed was the shims added or removed. |

Where are these shims located? I havent had the shroud out in a long time.
I am going to search for a breakdown.
Thanks. |

if you have not remove it recently and this noise has just started then you fan may be going bad. make sure your gen/alt strap is tight. a loose strap will allow the gen/alt to shift a little cause the fan to become unaligned and rub. |

Forgot to ask, what kind of shims are these?
The same that go on the alt. pulley??
Thanks for the tips. |

Not trying to be a wiseass, but is the belt tight enough so it wont slip?

I'm having a similar problem, but at least have something to check after searching and finding this thread. I noticed a what sounded like a vibrating/rubbing noise when I start off in first or if I accelerate from idle while moving in a higher gear. It's at lower rpms only. I just had a mechanic remove the motor and replace the generator and fan......sigh.
I opened the lid and blipped the throttle, and there it was. Appears to be the fan rubbing against the shroud. It doesn't do it if I pull toward me on the shroud. I know the belt isn't slipping, because I'm running a cogged system and have been for years.
I'll try some of the suggestions here and see if any help. |

i had a similar sitch when i replaced generators. to make sure that it wasnt rubbing i loosened the genny strap then put my foot on the generator so it moved back as far as it needed to be then tightened the strap. i then gave it a spin to check for any rubbing/scraping sounds.
like a charm.
still working on the charging system though but thats a whole other thread. |
