OK I know this been asked 100's of times here.
I not found this question about it asked but maybe has I just cant find it.
Do the swing arms from link pin fit in to the holes of a ball joint car tubes.
I know the tubes and not the same spacing. But do the arms fit in the tube holes and stay on?
OK if that dont work what about cutting apart and link pin the fitting the tube to where the ball joint car was , This would end up with a wider tube spacing.
Would the spindle still work with the swing arms spaced wider?
I thought I read some place this was done on a off road race bug years back but I can not find the web page now. I thought it helped with bump seer.
Any ideas on this ? Can it be done? Should I do it? Will it work?
This is for a class 5/1600 bug and will have upper shock mounts relocated and the beem tied to the cage.

| You can cut the frame head to accomodate the tube. Decide wich tube you want to stay and which tube your gonna notch.....It will work. Bolts still stay the same one of the tubes has to be cut n ground so the beam will fit. 5 /1600's have done this before no problem. |

it looks like it will fit cutting a notch, But I can not hack up the front like the one in the link . That just looks bad. And the mounting of his box would never pass Score inspection. I think you can only hammer or heat and bend the side of the Frame head down 1" for tie rod clearance
And if the steering box was left High It will not work with bad bump steer .
But will it work widening the Link pin so the bars fit the notch's of the Ball joint car.
Thats is all I would try before I replace the frame head.

| Your not building a 5/1600 to race score with stock link pin fornt end? No one does. You need to go to the 1000 and take some pics. that guy did not have to cut the frame head if he'd installed a wright wrack.......Take your time and do it right the first time. Your gonna have a ton in the cromolly cage, the frame heads the least of your worries. |

My car is in the link above. I boxed in all my cuts and have a full cage. the fraim head was just to hold the beam square while doing the cage.

I'm going to run stock dimensions but will try to buy a extra strong custom one or have one made.
The cage I was planning on DOM 1.5" .095 wall tubing.
I plan on gathering as much information/photos as I can and will take from what I see and adapt it to how I will build mine.
I have got a lot of ideas and some helpful information from Trevor at Gonzo racing , I plan to copy his build and some others to do mine.
He has raced his bug in Mexico and has finished 4th in one.
I dont know if I need to go to Mexico to take photos Why cant I just use this photos? http://gonzoracing.net/construction/construction-4.htm
I would love to go see the 1000 in person I dont know If I could pull it off and If I could drive my new Dodge truck and not worry about it getting stolen or screwed up in the parking lot. Maybe a rental but no one I knows rents cars to go into Mexico? I'm 1500 miles from the mex border.
I guess I could take my Baja in my toy hauler park at a campground or walMart in San diego and drive my Baja into Mexico and hope it dont get stolen. Where would I go to see the cars 5/1600 not just see them drive past?
I'm just for now going to get as much information as I can .
What I need is Some one to say I raced the Baja 1000 in my 5/1600 and this is where I bought my part from and they can build you one too.
And see a photo of how its installed.
Until that happen I will use all the information from guys like Trevor and others sorry frogot ther names.
I try my best to make it happen.
Thanks for any and all help I need all I can get.

Brian,
You can get info on Race-Dezert. 5/1600 is a tough class to build without someone helping you. Go to SNORE and you can download a copy of the SCORE rulebook. Most races have a tech and contingency day the day before the race, the racers are there with there cars and like to show there stuff off. That would be a good time. Why would your truck be stolen in mexico? It could also be stolen in San Diego, if you stop for food or gas? Been to Mexico many times and no problems, you need to be smart about what your doing there......Good luck |
