| Hi, I'm new to this baja thing. With my bug, it feels like I'm starting out in 2nd gear. Probably because I have larger tires on the back? What transmission / gearing should I be looking for to have some 1st gear power plus have a nice gear for freeway driving? |

| If you can find one the 002 5 rib is a good blend of both worlds in stock form. 486 R+P and decent 4th gear for freeway with 31 or 32 inch rear tires. The 091 is also a decent choice. Really strong, the R+P is 457. You can run a 3 rib 002 but on the freeway in stock trim don't expect much over 55 mph with 31 inch tires. Also, if you haven't, read the Transmissions for dummies sticky at the top of the board. |

I found this one:
BUS 5 rib IRS (model#02) transmission. This is a core for rebuild-it may work, but I can not warrantee the usability so it is sold as is, @ $300
Is this what you are talking about? |

| Good core should be no more than a 100.00 |

| So if I get one of these, will it be a straight swap with the one I got without any modification? My Bug is a '74 standard IRS. |

| No, but there is a kit that you can get from the online suppliers that will need to be welded in to mount the trans. Try Mckensies. |

I called the guy, he is firm on the price. I will have to pass for now due to lack of funds. ($300 + $800 rebuild = too much) But, here is the info from craigslist Portland OR if one of you want it.
VW motor (type IV) and BUS 5 rib IRS (model#02) transmission these are cores for rebuild-they may work, but I can not warrantee the usability of these so they are sold as is, @ $300 ea. or $500 for both. CALL 503-651-2770 or 503-706-1267 ( trades for????) |
