yeah everything was fine when i pulled the engine...this is why i couldnt figure it out. but i did! the fuse on the second fartherst to the left popped. i replaced it and now im getting 12 V off that line to the coil. i accidentally touched that line to metal again with the ignition on and it popped agian. I fixed it again.

so last question before i start it up. i want to make sure i have my coil set up correctly. on the 15 port i have the line from the ignition, and 2 lines coming from the carb (my dad said that i didnt need to combine the 2 lines off the carb how it shows it in the book, but i can just have two seperate lines coming into the coil from carb, choke and solenoid???is that correct) also i think the book says that theres a wire coming off the 15 port to "harness" ...whats that? a ground?

on the 1 port, i got just the line from the dizzy

if all is good im going to fire it up tomorrow

What book are you looking at? Hopefully its the Bentley.

If it is, then why would you take advice from your dad that probably knows little to nothing about ACVW, over a manual that shows you everything you need to do to keep it running like it was designed to?

I guess you could run a separate wire from the choke heater to coil #15 and from the idle solenoid to #15, but you'll just be adding terminals and extra wire that can cause trouble later. The one from #15 to the harness is the black one that comes from the front and supplys the power, the harness is the bundle of wires that runs from front to back. Don't ground it.

Usually on the 15 terminal you have the black wire bringing 12V from the ignition switch. This wire should not be running through a fuse if I remember right. It will still work but VW never designed it that way.

There is another wire coming off the 15 terminal and that usually runs straight to the idle cutoff solenoid and then on to the choke. It's one wire with three spade female connectors on it. You could run two completely separate wires as BD mentioned but it's not commonly done that way.

The third wire you spoke of coming off the 15 terminal.... hmmm. I have no clue why that's there. What's the book show? It better not be going to ground or that's why you poped the fuse.

There is a separate black wire that goes down and forwards to the left with an inline fuse for the backup lights, it also goes on #15.

There you go. I was thinking right side.

So maybe it wasnt off the bentley book where i saw the diagram, but it was from this site. i guess i dont have reverse lights....ill put that on the list.

Riguy: i do have the bentley and my dad has been a mechanic for 25 years and has worked on many vw's. His mechanical principles are right on, but sometimes hes a bit off when it comes to specifics in vw's.
