I have searched and found some good info and some not so good info. I started thinking that it would be nice if all the good pics and ideas were in one thread.
So if you please, post pics of your roll cages, bumpers, suspension supports and engine cages. Give a brief description of what you did and why. Let us know what diam and wall thickness you used and what material, ie 1.5"X.120 DOM.

I have not begun to build mine yet so sorry nothing to get the ball rolling. I do have a few questions:
Does anyone make a good kit or pre-bent roll cage for the type 1?
If so who and how much?
I have found a few, made from seamed tubing, but by the time you add on the shipping they are as much if not more then the material to make a much nicer one using DOM tubing. I think I'm just going to get the materials and build my own.
Next question: Mounting pionts, where and how?
I have built a 3' lift/sub-frame. Made from 2x3 rectangular tubing. I am going to tie into that and the floor pan for my mounting. I will also use a .125 4x4 plate on the pan.
As I build mine I will post photos and ask for opinions. Hope to get the materials soon.

You can pickup a pre bent, weld in roll cage at moore parts or any of the off road shops.
They are usually made for a 3 inch lift so you will have to cut it to fit.

Those cages are 1.5 x .095 steel, I added to mine with .120 and it weighs a ton.

I only used about half of the kit, then did my own design.

I forget the price, check out theyre website.

If you do mount it to the pan, use a plate on the bottom and top.
