| Hey my 71 super is making a humming type loud vibration at top speed but goes away as I accelerate, but gets real loud if I put her in neutral at around 50mph. checked trans fluid level: ok, hardly any play in cv's(although on side had more action than the other?) any ideas?? |

| Well I'm driving(gassin) at 55mph and I let off the gas and I hear and feel a loud vibrating hollow thud........ until I give it more gas and goes away, but if I put in neutral at 55 that noise is back and louder |

does it just happen a 55 mph? long shot guess, glandnut not torqued correctly and the flywheel is coming loose and hitting the bell housing. happened to me. |

By 55mph, I mean in 4th gear going 45-60 mph.
It doesn't make this noise at lower speeds. thx for reply, I did not install this flywheel,po did. |

| Do you feel it too (in the motion of the car) or just hear it? |

| Check for a rear hub with play(rock back and forth) where it fits on the axle splines,a result of axle nut not tight enuf and if loose have to get another hub. |

| Also check the front trans mount. The hollow thud could be the front of the trans flopping around. |

Coasting at high speed is the loudest.
Its speed related
I'll check hubs and trans mounts
Thanks
I will take a drive to see if I can come up with any more details |

ok , so there is play in hub and the axel spline.
It's vertical play (12&6 oclock) not horizontal, is this normal? |

| mine had exactly the same symptoms you describe. the left rear axle nut was not fully tight. i removed the cotter pin and tightened the nut per the bentley manual. no more noise or play. while i was at it, i did the right one too. it was about as tight as the left one, but no play at the axle. weird. |

Yeh, the axel play has me worried,
Isn't the axel bolted in? |

are you talking about the axle going from the transmission to the stub axle with the cv joints on both end? or you talk about the brake drum being loose on the stub axle? |

| The end of the axel with spline and threads moves up and down |

| the center nut on the drum holds the splinde in tight if torqued down correctly. if the nut is torqued correctly and you still have movement then the bearings inside are bad. if it is not torqued correctly then you should look at the bearing and also the splines on the drum and stub axle for wear. |

did you check the wheel/stub axle for being tight with the wheel off the ground? if it still is tight then it could be a CV joint or stub axle bearing going bad. |
