Here's one, except for the suspension mods and headlight visors it's the real deal.

Has no one seen these? They're rubber for street-use. I bet you could rig a bus to take them somehow.... http://www.mattracks.com

well here it is, since my last possible applicant for the combatbus flaked out and couldnt produce a bus. i went shopping and found this minimal rust micro bus. its got a fresh engine and brakes all the way around. i have no idea why they painted the wheels like that or why the seat where reupholstered purple.

I was going to suggest that for your purpose a later model, domestic brand 4 wheel drive mini van would be better and cheaper. But I see you have your bus now.
The one you got is ideal in one respect, it has the lowest geared transaxle. You should find it will climb any mountain in low gear.
Any engine mods should be aimed at more torque not more horsepower. In other words a mild cam and small carbs even if you go to a larger displacement.
You will want some good off road traction tires such as snow tires but try to stick to stock size and commercial rating. Large diameter tires will louse up your gearing. Small diameter tires will enhance hill climbing power.
Your bus already has a lot of ground clearance and almost no overhang. So you should be able to go nearly as far back in the bush as a Jeep.
Keep it light. Avoid the temptation to load it down with equipment and camping supplies.
O, and have fun. |

I know T4s more than T1s, but I think you need a engine to body seal.
Nice bus, I wish I had bought something more like that. |

tires are ordered 27/8.50 14. a little large but the calculations show minor gearing change, its not like i tossed 31" tires on it. :) i did notice it has a really low first more than any other bus ive driven sans redux boxes. any one know the ratios? i plan on a 2007 or 2110 engine build but that will be a parts collection endevor.i plan on keeping it really light i only have the rear seat and dont plan on any center seat. i wanted a bus for this project cause ive always wanted one and its nice to own a vw again. i have also decided not to paint this one the paint is in decent shape and i m sure i can buff it out.

| what kind of combat bus doesn't have fender cut-outs stuffing 31's or larger? My street oriented build has 27's on it.. Start thinking outside the box here. Stuff an olds 455 and a toranado trans in that mofo. Put 35's under it and 12 inches of lift. I imagined a hill climing breadloaf but now I'm a little dissapointed. Shame shame shame [-X |
