I have a 1600 dual port with about 500 miles on it after rebuild. Its has new plugs, wires, fuel lines, fuel filter, carb was adjusted (34 pict3) with a 009 mechanical advance (i know its a bad combo but it was running fine before this problem came up). compression was 120 per cylinder.
Everything was fine the first 400 or so miles. Then, from one day to the other i started noticing quite a bit of hesitation when getting on the gas. it starts to sputter until i back off the throttle a bit. I set the timing at 7.5 BTDC and the problem remained. I then set the timing at 30 degrees at 2000 rpms, still hopping. The accelerator pump IS squirting fuel (i checked)
I forgot to mention the car runs like a dream when its cold. The problem emerges once is warms up. It also revs up quickly and smoothly in neutral. It starts to stumble once under load.
Any help will be much appreciated. Im completely stumped :( |

| your timing needs to be between 28 and 32 at 3500+ rpms! |

| Check to make sure you choke is fully opening up. Also check that you have the proper fuel pressure. |

| could be a leak in the intake manifold. stuff shifts and moves while heating up. |

The choke is completely open once warmed up. Havent checked my fuel pressure. Ill time it again and see if that takes care of it. I feel like for every 2 days that I drive it, i gotta spend 6 days working on it
Im trying to get this thing ready for bug jam in 2 weeks. Its a 4 hour drive. I hope she makes it lol |

Thanks for the quick replies by the way! Forgot to mention it in my previous reply. Im just a bit flustered
My question is this. The car was running perfectly fine. I didnt mess with anything. What can cause this to happen from one day to the next? Im 99% positive that the intake manifold is brand new. The heat risers are connected and heating up evenly. |

| it could be a lot of different things. you said you have around 500 miles on the rebuild, have you readjusted the valves? even tho the intake is new, it can still have leaks at the head and at the intake boots. also could be some trash in the carb. could be several other things, but these would be the easiest to check now. |

mine had similar symptoms about 100 miles in to a fresh rebuild
turned out to be the accelerator pump adjustment

Damn, I never got around to sending off the paper work. Crap....
Mine is running like crap right now as well. I know mine to be a carb issue. Needs a rebuild....even with it sputtering about it is still fun to drive. :) |

| Sounds simple, but check your point gap??? |

It also sounds a bit like a minor vacuum leak - are your plugs covered in grayish - yellowish deposits, indicating that it's running lean?

| I agree, vacuum leak. Check the manifold to head nuts, carb to manifold nuts, and intake manifold rubber boots. |

| Sounds just like how mine was before I got my 009 Set right. just watch the timing while reving, you'll see it stops moving around 3k not 2k. So I say set it at 30 degrees at 3k. |

Ill be sure to check all this tonight when i get home from work. I pulled the plugs on it the other night and they seemed fine (no grey deposits or signs of running lean). Valves havent been readjusted. Ill definitely get on that tonight. Ill reset the timing at 30 degress at 3000 rpms as well. If none of this works, Ive been looking online for a SVDA to go with my 34pict3. At least if that doesnt take care of my problem ill be upgrading and getting a couple more miles per gallon :D
Once again, i appreciate all your help. Ill be back on to let you know how things went.
Has anyone tried the SVDA from aircooled.net by the way? Thats the one ive had my eye on... |

I have one of those aircooled SVDAs and they are a pretty nice unit that ships quicky.
If it were me I would adjust the valves and points and time it to 28º BTDC at about 3500 or so and see if it runs any better.
Heat risers gettng all toasty warm after a little run? |

Yea the heat risers are getting pretty toasty lol. I will definitely be adjusting valves, timing, and points tonight before I buy anything. Im kinda leaning towards the SVDA at this point though. I havent heard anything bad about it. Ive done some research and people actually say its like driving a completely different car (in a good way). A lot of people seem to have an issue with the 009 (especially when running it with a 34pict3).
Ill let you know how things go in a bit Randy 8-[ |

Alright guys so I put in a brand new SVDA from aircooled.net and rebuilt the carb. She runs like a champ now. No flat spots, no hopping. I appreciate you guys helping me get back on the road.
