View original topic: Installing Rack & Pinion

I bought a rack & pinion I'm going to be installing on my sand rail, is there any guides or walk throughs on installing these things as far as aligning them up correctly to avoid bump steer, making sure they're installed at the right height and what not. the front end is a ~1970 ball joint beetle front end.

Tack weld your mount together, and tack some pieces on to hose clamp it to the beam. Assemble your steering and front suspension without springs, shocks, or torsion bars so you can cycle the suspension. Experiment with the angle (position) until you get the most reduction in bump steer. You need to measure the toe at full compression, ride height, and full droop at each position, making very small changes each time. It is a time consuming process, but well worth the effort. Don't get frustrated and scab it on... be patient and you will get a good drivable set up.

I just welded my rack on my car (took all day to get bumpsteer to go away)

That is how I did it. Worked great.

Is that a kit for mounting it or did you cut those three pieces. They look aluminum?

It is a kit I bought at McKenzie's... it is all steel - not aluminum. I haven't quite developed the process of welding aluminum brackets to a steel beam yet.

Maybe he thought you held it on the beam with the clamps :D
