View original topic: Need Wider Lip Rear Glass Seal
www.L5VW.com Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:48 pm

Just replaced rear window seal on a 69 bus that had been nicely repainted once. Lip on new seal is very thin and old paint line shows. Anybody know if it`s true WCM {or other company?} seal would be wider to help hide paint line? Thanks

pick one thread or the other and don't ask the question twice. I just answered it on the other thread.

not sure what forum replying too but the cheaper the seal the bigger the gap. have found WCM to have the better quality seal there is a considerable amount of debate over who has the best seals. the three cars I have built all have WCM seals and no complaints from me on this type of issue although I always remove the glass before painting it is so much easier

Yes, I would never repaint w/o pulling glass first but this vehicle was already done. Thought I`d replace the rear glas seal. No problem but the lip seems much thinner than the og seal I removed. Guess we`ll order another brand and see what happens. Thanks

many aftermarkeyt seals sorta sit recessed and the lip is not flat on the metal, look for other posts and youll see, sorta sucked in.

You work for WCM ? Heard thier seal might have a little wider lip?

Not my bus but the seal fits just the same as in the first picture.....I already pulled it back out.

Was there a label with the brand and part number on the seal?

Are you sure you don't have a seal with a slot for chrome trim? That's where the other guy messed up. He put in a seal designed for the trim but didn't put in the trim. And without the trim in the slot the seal doesn't provide the correct size and shape.

When someone paints they should take the windows out. Or the second best way is cut back the lip of the seal before painting. Then later when new seals are put in they will overlap the paint edge.

the seal in that thread does not seem to have a lip, that is not how the WCM will turn out. where the paint line is , is APPROX. where the WCM will sit, let may say again****APPROX****. i dont want to promise i that on this forum but i use our own seals all the time and although i am loyal i do want whats good. its true that seals that are meant for trim will work but will vary as far as the lip is concerned, when the trim is ommited. ps that seal in the example thread pic looks like shit and was probably old.

Just installed the WCM seal and it is just right ! Very happy with fit and shape of seal. Installed easy and looks great !

If you have matching paint you could tape off the rubber and touch up the line with a small brush.

If you don't have matching paint you could tape off the bus and touch up the line with black paint.

I know it's not ideal but if you have a line of some different color showing the black paint will make it disappear until you look real close, and easier than replacing the rubber.
