Any tricks on making the engine more offroad proof?

I would disagree with this statement, Plenty of class 11 cars get stuck in the silt beds near plaster city, where 5/16 cars don't. I would say for regular everyday driving they will go Most anywhere a baja will go, but it Will depend on the baja that you compare it to.

is a 5/16 a baja set up for an actual race like a class 11

It's set up to race, but the class allows quite a few more modifications than class 11. It's pretty much completely different, other than the engine and trans. They have similar rules.

Check the times this year at the baja 1000, 1101 vs the 5/1600's and see what we do? A Modern class 11 will hang with a 5/1600 until you get into the big woops.....and when I say baja, I dont think this guy is going to build a 5/1600. Lets not confuse this, I see all the adds for 5/1600's that are no where near a real 5/1600, they are baja's. I don't take my class 11 out and joy ride it, it's a race car.

5/1600 came from the 11 class. A Modern 11 is bassicly the old rule class 5/1600 minus the removal of the sheet metal.

how much dough can i expect to spend on building my 66 into a race ready class 11?

blitzschnell racing Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:36 pm

10,000 for a average build, there is a race ready class 11 on the class11coalition, pretty cheap, been for sale for along time......you can buy one cheaper than build one. Depends on what you have for funds. I have about 25,000 in my 11 so far and the upgrades keep coming. If your gonna build a race 11 you wana find a IRS car. Swings are a thing of the past, there is only a few still running them and the transaxle guys don't like working on them anymore, I hear rumor that Dave Foltz dosn't do the swings any more.......

bakertool13 Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:42 pm

oh so the 66 is no good for the class 11 eh

blitzschnell racing Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:45 pm

there are better options......

bakertool13 Mon Nov 02, 2009 1:00 pm

the one on class11coalition your talking about is the one for 6800?

what about this one?

blitzschnell racing Mon Nov 02, 2009 3:29 pm

Interesting, wondering if it has a cage in it? If it does and its a legal class 11 thats a steal! Havn't seen that one around? the one for 6800.00 is very clean and a very good car for the money, I KNOW its race ready, not sure on the other one? You need to call and ask if its a class 11 or a class 11 look alike? Thats the problem, alot of ads advertise a class 11 or 5/1600 and they are not......

I read on class11coalition that even with the allowed upgrades, the irs cars have trouble finishing Baja. Is this true? If so, maybe the OP would be better off building his '66.

bakertool13 Mon Nov 02, 2009 3:53 pm

why would an IRS have trouble finishing baja? To many breakable parts?

blitzschnell racing Mon Nov 02, 2009 4:10 pm

To finish a baja race you need to keep moving, the number one killer is poor construction and prep. I race with Solorzano (Dust to Glory), he preps the car 100% we average about 25 mph and manage to finish just about every time. Eric always runs the swingaxle at the 1000 (there are two cars), this year we ran it at the 500 also. I have noticed alot of racers only race the stateside loop type races, they have that mentality when they go to baja. If you see our SNORE (Nevada) standings you see that we do better in a distance race than a shorter race. We dominated our class at the MINT 400 this year. We have gotten very proficient at long distance. Just to give you some food for thought, Eric put about $8000.00 into the car for the Baja 500, We won, and he turned around and started all over again for the Baja 1000. IRS is allowed to run type 2 c.v.'s so breaking them is a thing of the past, I am running the same set I put on my car at the 2007 Baja 1000.

So do you prefer the irs? It seems that it would be more cost effective to run a swingaxle.... I hope this is the info that the OP is interested in, I don't mean to hijack, I am wanting a Class 11 also so any tips from you "old hands" is appreciated.

bakertool13 Mon Nov 02, 2009 4:29 pm

what is the big disadvantage of the swing axle? i would prefer not to have to sell my beetle and buy another haha
