Hi guys,
I run a OG stock pierburg mech fuel pump as part of the engine clean up,I've taken my fuel pump apart to clean it up,now I've put it all back together.
however I *think* I've read somewhere that the diaphram needs to be pre tensioned by a special VW tool on re fit or it will fail.
is this right or did I dream it? or do I just put it all back together and forget about it? I've tried to search the forums without luck.
also - where can I get a new paper gasket that fits between the cap & the body of the pump?

| You could buy some gasket paper and cut out a gasket if you can't find one. It's not hard. |

| I have rebuilt mine on my Ghia using a kit, never had a problem with it. No special doodahs either. |

| Also looks right to me, but not sure if there is some variation that I don't know about - pushrod length or something like that... LOOKS right though, from here. |

It's identical to the pump shown in the Bentley manual for a '68-'70.
I've seen kit's listed but sorry, don't remember which suppliers. |

And yes, the repos are nasty. Often seized from the factory.
I do carry one as a spare though. |

not that it will fail it just won't work at all.
before, and while you tighten the screws you have to push the lever inside the pump up 13mm. you can do this one of three ways:
with the "special" vw tool.
use a 13mm nut on your bench and PUSH DOWN HARD.
or on the engine with the rod at it's maximum throw.
i like the last method cuz you can tighten the nuts and hold the pump while you tighten the screws. kind of a tight squeeze on the hard to reach screws though.
you will need to cut your own gasket for the top. |
