I have cruised at 90 mph for awhile in Eastern Washington when I was trying to make up time.

The thread title specifically states "STOCK" Bus and its top speed. Being that have a camper special in your Bus, that's hardly stock.

1600 SP. Stock transmission.
90MPH...

...down the grapevine with a tail wind.

Scared the crap out of me, won't do it again without serious modification to the brakes and a new steering box.

Last year, about 1 1/2 hours at 80 with no problems, driving home on I95 and I4 to Orlando. It was running great and I wanted to test it. It's still running great, and it'll even go a little faster, but why? Stock 2L FI.

Yeahhh, that parking brake light has been on since I bought it...and it's FULL of lots of wiring surprises I've discovered as of late. That's one that's on my list to figure out. But it doesn't bother me right now.

The Road Warrior hit 85-90 a few times on long desert downgrades.
Fastest long-term cruise was 80 where the engine was sounding good.

Gearing-wise with stock tires, the early buses can do 97 at redline, the later buses can do 102 , but who on Earth . . . . . would even attempt such a thing?

85MPH in a stock 1600 DP 79 Double Cab. This was on a nice flat stretch of Autobahn. GPS backed it up. Pegged out the speedo on a nice downhill stretch. That got a little scary. Not enough brakes for all the people pulling out in front the old, slow bus.

Stock - about 75 in a stock 1971 DP. The motor is too new in the 1977 to push it like that and there is too much slop in the steering.

Hotrodded 1600DP with ported heads, dual carbs, a mild cam and headers - about 95 for 15-20 seconds as I was afraid it might ventilate. In the desert, straight and level, lots of hard packed sand around, no rocks, trees or wind. Anything faster than 75 - 80 in a bus takes a lot of concentration. It does not repond well to crisis nor does the engine like the RPM that speed takes it to.

Most comfortable speed - 55 - 65 on the highway and 40 - 45 on country roads.

my stock 1.7L type4 I got it to 85 on a down hill, with wind behind me, on a good day, till I almost flew off the road. I don't think it will ever go faster then that with this engine, I don't want it going that fast again.

I was doing this in a semi flat freeway (400) here in Atlanta. I like to cruise around 70 just to keep up with traffics. Sometimes it would creep up to 80 if I don't watch it. Stock 1600 with Brosol 34 pict 3 carb.

Front and Rear 7/8 sway bars help out a lot. 8)

I actually think I could get it faster I relized today that I adjusted my accelerator cable and might have shorted myself I am going to tighten it up and give her another run, Maybe 80, Dare to dream. Also very much need to tighten up steering, I have about 3-5 inches of play. Which is a son of a gun going over the Skyway on a windy day..

The needle went past 90mph as I put Ludwig in neutral and plunged into Death Valley down Townes Pass one night a few years ago. Once I realized that the only thing that was gonna slow us down was either getting to the bottom in one piece or hitting a rock, I got pretty scared. Stupid stupid stupid stupid.

VanderBus Sat Oct 31, 2009 6:53 am

Mine got up to 85 once.

Oh, did I mention it was on the back of a flatbed hauler!

The CS IS a STOCK displacement 2.0 engine. It utilizes stock pistons, cylinders and crankshaft as well as a stock rod length.

The "Combo" is not stock and IS the KEY to the performance.

75 mph... in neutral going through western md. nothing like flooring it in third going 40 up hill in the truck lane with the hazards on. the downhill part is better but it scared the shit out of me.
