Actually it won't run even with the unk wire hooked up this time!
I have an unknown brownish white wire coming through the frie wall along with the coil (+) & the oil sender wire. It was hooked to the coil
(-) side and the engine would misfire and run extremely rough w/o it hooked up. After my 5th engine pull / install (don't ask :cry: ), this thing acts the same [horrible] but is all hooked up. No '71 wiring diagram anywhere shows this.
ANYONE have a clue what this is all about?

one side of the coil gets 12V through the ignition switch and the other side goes to the distributor green wire.

Sure, I get that....
I also have the oil pressure switch wire coming from that harness
AND, another mystery wire I described.

Does your bus have a test network plug on the roof of the engine compartment at the right rear?

Yes, What does that mean??

Also if it hooks to the negative side of the coil it could be a wire for a tach.

If the mystery wire is white, nearly white or not a color on a regular wiring digram it's likely for test network, very early networks installed in late 71's had mostly white wiring like an FI harness, if it runs good with it off you may not need it.

Not a tach wire; I put that one on. So, I have 3 wires to the negative side;
The mystery wire is 'nearly' white and probably does have something to do with that pointless plug hanging from above but, it definately needed to be hooked up to run, previously. Why it refuses to run this last time is just plain strange. Seems like I'll have to actually cut the harness wrap to follow the white-ish wire. This is the first 1600 DP bus that has just kicked my butt. Wish I actually new more about using a volt meter :?

Like BD says. Look at your wiring diagram again. There are test network wires connected to both sides of the coil if you have the late '71 with the test network. If so then you also have all kinds of network wires all thru your electrical system. Including starter, lights, etc. It can be a potential source for various problems. A lot of people clip those wires and pull them out.
