I completely know that feeling! I like uncovering everything at my own hands too, it ensures the bonding experience is more pure and untainted.

My joining forces with Old Blue atop a forested mountainside, 10 miles up a dirt road with no one or houses as far as the eye could see, I camped with him and a John Muir book in a tent in the bed. Fourteen days later, with no previous experience (1996), after a split case swap, an engine swap and complete brake job -all in the dirt by myself- I drove Old Blue from the mountain he'd been stuck in for 20+ years. Ok, I think, tripple Damn!?

1. Finding the single cab up that road
2. Camping out and snuggling with it for 14 days to get it home
3. The "deer get the hell out of my way gun" mounted to the roof

Yup 3! Very cool story! Yea, Im really stoked to get over there this weekend and get it home. Already have some buddies helping me gather missing parts and offering parts I may need, there's no other community like the veedub community!

And I've hear rummors of "shasta" flavored trip that may take place in Washington! But I will leave the true word of that up to the people in charge.

Wow, would be ABOUT TIME! Not that this thing down here isn't a lot of fun every year, but ah, for however many years it's been -for me- these mountain roads are getting a little played out. I'd love to hit some appropriately challenging back-woods endurance event in WA!

Getting packed/ready for the trip. Packing:
Tow bar, bumper bracket mount style
Extra front wheel bearings / drums
Drum puller
Gear oil
Tools
Ratchet straps
Clutch? (Found out from a buddy last night your supposed to put one on the input shaft and zip tie it so that it doesnt spin)
Spare tires
Tow lights

And anything else someone might suggest?

You're planning on a long flat tow. Copy. Good list so far.

Spare tires on wheels ready to go, plural, as in at least 2-3 spares. If you blow a cap off one of the rear tires, you can keep on towing it. If it becomes a flapper that's tearing up your wheel well, you can either change it or bring a hack saw and cut the offending flapper off and keep on going; it's nice when the whole tread flies off as you don't have to do anything. If you have a front start to throw rubber, change it out.

Plan on a front end shimmy. Your truck may have come with no steering dampener if it's early enough, but I've towed buses with bad steering dampeners that caused the front wheels to wildly and violently shimmy back and forth. If I recall, I solved the problem by removing the dampener, but I may have replaced it with a good one before continuing. Tieing the steering wheel off with ratchet straps from two different places firmly will also fix the problem but you loose your steering and the bus skids around turns in town. I had a shimmy so bad one time when flat towing one of the fronts blew out and the bus almost rolled :shock: Be prepared. Almost all of my flat towing has been anticlimactic. Oh, and know what to do when the fuzz gives you a light show. Me, I've always chanced it and have never been pulled over here in Northern Calfornia. Really looking forward to pictures and posts of the trip. Bring your computer so you can upload from a WIFI and keep us here in sambaland plastered to our flat screens. :D What's your ETA to the excellent truck?

Should be rolling out this afternoon sometime. Got all the goodies from the garage/friends rounded up last night and just need to throw them in. I plan on being there all day Saturday and going through everything I can to me the tow a better one. I will probably be able to post the action Sunday afternoon or evening when I get the chance.

Well, with so many entries it will take some time to determine the winner. :lol: . But here it is, the 380 miles flat tow re-location of a left for dead May of 59 single cab, my new toy :twisted:

Didnt even know if our tow rig would make it, well it actually didnt. Fuel pump died 150' from my house...

Was able to take it to my grandparent house for a tow tune-up, in a nice quiet lake side community, I thought it fit in just fine!

Grandparents gave use of their garage for the towing maintenance

Strapped, oiled, and ready to roll from one side of Washington to the other

Im an east-sider, and the damn thing followed me home, guess it wanted a dryer climate. Might get it over to the vintage meet next summer though.

Yea, me too! It actually seems like I will be getting this one on the road in not too long of a time. Have some local buddies with some huge hook-ups and will keep the post living.

The clutch thing was turned onto me by Big D, who said he was turned onto it by Lind? Anyways, if I understand it correctly, if your flat towing long distances the imput shaft can spin, and two much free spinning can blow ou the seal or F*** up the shaft? Ive never heard of it until this trip, but will start doing it from now on. Someone out there should have a way better answer than mine.
