I once bought a used baja that fired up after 20-30 mins worth of work. It had been sitting for six years. Would fire up, but wouldn't draw fuel from tank and I couldn't "roto rooter" it out with wire. The rear window was knocked out, dropped a fuel can in rear cargo space, stuck in some hose, pumped up the brakes and snuck her home after dark, great times!!!

Well so much for drinking beer and watching TV. My evening was more like drinking vodka and finishing welding up my rear bumper and the brackets that connect it to the roll cage. I'll get some pics tomorrow of what i did. But i decided that i could use material i have at home to make the modifications needed for my bumper to tie into the roll cage. I got it all done, now i just need two more 1 1/2" flanges to mount my bumper.

damn, i would hate to see my welds if i was drinking vodka. although i do love screwdrivers. I wish i was as far along as you are. seems like welding never ends huh. Have you decided if you're gonna want that mat? No hurry or anything, just wondering. Sucks, i had to quit earlier than I wanted to tonight, my solar pwred welding helmet died. Your car's looking nice. when are you gonna paint? I've decided to paint mine also. I'm going to do black and a dark purple. or at least I want to. later

YES IT DOES. Im tired of grinding and welding and getting grinding bits in my hair and eye's and nose and mouth and all over the $&^#@*! place, and its only the second day of some real fabricating. Ohh well. And yes Chubby, i still want that rubber if you have a chunk about 55"x40". I think that will be enough.
Today i got done with my rear bumper.
It really dosent look that differnt, in fact i think the old fire wall tubes were mounted to the bumper in the exact same spot, but where they come up to the fire wall is in a different location.
My new mounting flanges. 4 bolts now instead of 8. And i used to have to use a pair of vise grips on the inside to get my old bumper off. These are way easier.
Here's the inside.
These welds were really hard to get a full weld all the way around, but a little vodka and it dosent hurt so much to get burt while being cramped up in an odd position.

I don't think that mat is that wide, but you might be able to contact cement or something like that to get two pieces together. I'll measure it tomorrow and let you know what i have.

That black hippo liner is good stuff.... can't say much for their colored variety though. Less than a year and it's cracking, and it's near impossible to get the same texture as the black stuff...

Well i wasnt planning on doing it today, but jeff hibbard and i lifted the rear. Good book right there. He explains all you need to know about turning the torsion bar. I dont know how many splines i turned the torsion bar, but i got about 1 inch higher and 5* lower on the spring plate with it not sitting on the stop. I was looking at the axles and they are about level now. I think i will get some urethane bushings ordered and go up a little higher.

I also found out my rear soft brake lines where plugged. I just ordered stainless steel braided ones from chirco. I also got some urethane torsion bar bushings for the rear and trailing arm bushings. I really wasnt planning on doing this kind of a project right now, I was going to wait till the end of next semiester, but i know how to take apart the rear suspension now, so i might as well fix it up.

well i havent been on here for a while. ive still been working on the bug though. That x mas stuff really bogged me down.
I dont have any pics to show yet, but i got my engine cover on. I used rubber tabs on the engine cover, the same kind that are used to hold the hood down. I also got the rear flexable brake lines hooked up and the breaks rebled. They still dont feel that great but theyre ok for now.
I decided to wait until summer to paint. its too cold this time of the year. and im broke.
I put in the torsion bar bushings and lifted the rear again. I still think it could go up higher, but i want to wait untll i get some better cv's
I also put all the windows in.
I got my turn signal lights installed up front and the switch put in. in the three years iv had a baja, i never had turn signals.
Put in a dome light last night. i was excited for that. i have never had one of those either in my baja.
Ohh and i ran into some carb/dizzy/engine problem that had me hung up for days....
the pilot/idler jet got clogged and i thought it was everything else but that. (to be honest, i didnt really know about that jet. i had never taken it out before) but with some help from a few people in the samba chat room i figured it out. but i only figured it out after i had messed with the dizzy and the idle mixture screw, the choke, the timing, switching dizzys, getting new points cap rotor condensor for the 205m dizzy and it still not working.
Any way now its back to a good idling carb and the 009 (:?) |
