| yeah those rubber tie downs hold the engine cover pretty secure. it gets wedged up against the body seam. the words read "wheelin for joe powel". a friend of mine that was killed not to long ago. He showed me a few things about getting crazy off road. |

Well i wasnt expecting to do this today, but i just walked out to my car and started putting a headliner in it. I used some spare fabric i have laying around and cut out a few feet. i used the three headliner bows i have to hold it up in the middle, and some rope to hold it down around the edges. It came out pretty well.
What really trips me out about this is that i didnt really even plan this out, i just walked out to my car to put a socket back, and next thing i know im hanging a headliner. |

| The 3M is not a bad idea. i will probably do that eventually. it depends on how much of a sound deadener it is. |

i was thinking of some kind of carpet for the flooring. something i could take out in a hurry if i plan on going out to play, but would be nice for heat and sound for daily driving. thinking of the same material, but on snaps or something. maybe one piece for the tunnel, and 2-4 pieces for the floor. maybe even something for the front kickpanels/firewall. still a long ways away though.
that way if it gets nasty muddy or wet it won't fog up my car for two months. |

i was just thinking something funny, how about that green fake lawn turf. get some that is extra thick. I might do that.
Today im thinking about working on the interior some more. probably make a plywood cover that goes over the stock battery location. I wnat to protect the heater "Y" that is down on the floor. I know with out that cover there it will get stepped on and broken. I might also make some 1/4 panel covers and fill in the 1/4 panel with some fiberglass insulator, if my house building neighbor wants to kick down some. |

| if your serious about the fiberglass, i would be cautious, you would think it would act like a big sponge and just suck up moisture and hold it. end up rotting you car from the insides out. |

Well today started really stressful. I made a 100 mile round trip to get some dash heater vents from a Volkswagen store and when i got there i found that the guy only had the center dash vent. On top of that, i thought i was getting the (i dont know what to call it) manifold that snaps onto the vent as well. so i come home with my $12 center vent and use the manifold out of my 67'. i go to install the vent and find that it sticks out about 1/2 inch higher then the dash because i dont have a dash pad. And then i step in dog shit for the forth time in less then 24 hours.
it also turns out that the center manifold gets in the way of the headlight switch which sucks because i have to move it for the defroster to work and i dont like having extra holes in my dash.
These little things really suck. Its really nice to have them during the winter months, but for half the year they wont be needed.
On a good note, yesterday i took it out for its first taste of real good mud. There was this mud pit right next to a small road. I went trashing through it a few times. Then as i was coming out the front drivers tire went up the embankment, down into the ditch between the road, then the other wheels followed and i nearly fliped the thing backwards. i guess its kind of hard to explain, but it was cool. It scared the shit out of me and made me think i need to start being a little more cautious. |

| does it drive different than the swing axle car? just wondering if it is worth doing a irs swap on my 67. where did you go to get the parts? |

Its handles way better off road. It floats over the bumps way better then the swing axle. It dosnt seem to handle as good as the swing axle on road, but that might be because i dont have the "Z" bar, and i think the toe setting might be off a bit.
As far as converting yours to an IRS, i was too chicken to do it...well the body was trash too, but its been done before so why not. you can get all the parts you need at a auto dismantler. or start out right. get some 3x3's installed. |

if you plan on sticking with a ball joint front end(since that's what you are already running), find an irs pan and do a body swap, Might be less painful than welding gussets on a balljoint pan.
satellite, i took the center defrost vent off of my 66 body and was going to cut it in the dash of my 64. it will be a tight fit, plus i plan on going to toggles for all my switchs. but the snap in piece fits snug on the sheet metal. maybe try to find something like that? |

| i want to do an irs conversion on my 66'... how much of a pain in the ass is it really? |

| if you want to do a conversion on a ball joint pan i would just look into finding an irs pan and do a body swap. to do a conversion you would need to either pull the body off anyways or cut some big holes under the rear seat so you can get access to the torsion housing. |

| its almost easier buying an irs roller swapping parts over than swaping pans. i took the zbar out and it has a little more body roll but other than that no differance |

| that's true, i was thinking if he already has the body how he wants it, then swap pans and done, but if he hasn't done anything yet, or hardly anything then a roller is a good idea. |

It does more than you can imagine right now. Been there and did it.
When I was in your shoes I could not afford a cheap EMPI oil cap. I would still be in those same shoes if I did not sacrifice some of my Vdubing for awhile.
Go man go! |
