Some other somthin' somethin' i got set up today is a "glove box". I put a ammo tuna can on my center hump. I used a piece of angle iron the help hold it up. I had to chip away the tar paper on the hump, which was a dirty job. I also went through 5 drill bits trying to drill a hole in the angle iron for a screw hole. And that was just one hole. I dont know why, but the first hole i drilled in the angle iron went right through with out a problem. The second hole, well thats where i used up 5 drill bits. :x
I realized that if i cut away a little more of the top of the tuna can, i would be able to set a 12 pack in there!! thats just bad thinking huh? |

| I bet I can guess where the angle iron came from.... bed rail! That is some of the gnarliest steel on the planet! You just got lucky with the first hole is all. I "save" my bedrail steel for where it really counts, and buy mild for everything else. It really does a number on sawsall blades also! |

HAHA, yep. Thats exactly where it came from. So that is a superior quality metal then huh? I was wondering if it was better then the stuff you buy at a metal yard.
I made all my brackets for the stereo system today and welding them in. The radio mounts overhead in the center of the car and the speakers sit right above my head on the side of the radio. Its going to have some really short speaker wires. The speakers i have right now are small 3" speakers, but i made brackets for the pod the speakers are in, which can fit 6" speakers. I'll get those later on if i need to, but i think a new radio is in order first. Actually a new master cylinder is in order first. I check my fluid reservoir today and it was bone dry. I looked around the M/C and found brake fluid all over. The brakes still feel good, but i think it would be good to have a new one that dosent leak. I think its leaking from where the pedal push rod connects to the M/C.
Any one know where to get good reliable M/C's?
I'll post some pics of the stereo system tomorrow when the paint is dried and everything is hooked up. |

| Yeah, bedrail is darn near spring steel. Think about how thin it is, and then the reach it takes under a bed, all the abuse it takes over the years(hopefullyLMAO) and it never sags or gives way, really good metal. |

strange. i thought the chinese ones would be great. j/k
I put my stereo and speakers in this morning after a nice morning surf session (which was bomb and has inspired me to make a removable board rack for the baja). It dosnt sound great and the cd player dosnt work, but its nice to have some tunes finally.
I got to tuck away some wires, and yes that is the antenna next to the radio. I got to drill a hole and mount that to the side view mirror/headlight bracket on the door.
Now about the surfboard rack. I have a 10'6" board and a 6'9" board. I think the 6'9" can fit inside, but i cant have a passenger. So the rack i was planning to make sits the boards partially on the roof and partially on this removable rack, which attaches to the rear bumper. I am going to weld a 1.75" x 4" long tube to the rear bumper, then use some 1.5" tube and weld some of that bad ass angle iron, mentioned earlier, to the top of it to make a large "T". The angle iron would get some padding cover to protect the boards. Then the 1.5" tubing would slip into the 1.75" and bolt in. They have to get mounted on the side of the roof since my oil cooler is right in the center and im afraid the boards being there would block the wind. So this poses a problem because the side of the roof has a curve to it, while the "T" would be horizontally level. So i either make the top of the "T" angled to match the curve of the roof, or make a strap on rack that would level out the mounting place on the roof. Ya picken up what im laying down?
Maybe i'll have to draw it out, or just weld the shit together and show you guys what im talking about. Either way, it would be really cool to see my baja with boards on it and to take it out to the coast for some fun. |

I just gotta jump in here and share what I know about bed frame iron.
It's best, and nearly ONLY proper use is for holding up a bed.
It is concocted mostly from scrap, with very little attention paid to quality, nor is it homogeneous. it will have hard spots, carbon pockets, slag inclusions, cracks, cold pockets and worse. The outside looks nice but inside, it's a crap shoot.
It's made in a continuous pour process, like casting and then rolled to size and shape. no heat treating, stress relieving or hardness testing. It's usually poured with the bottom of the crucible (scrapings) so the alloy is all over the map, normally the pour master will just throw in enough silica and carbon to make it harder than the hub's of hell
The weld ability is suspect, sometimes it will weld just fine, other times, the welds will be very porous and weak. Often, it will crack, in the heat affected zone, as it cools. The heat from welding usually makes it very brittle as well, there's just no way to tell by looking.
It is NOT to be used in a structural application, unless "hot process" riveted. (like bed frames and shelves)
As mentioned above, it's hella rough on tools, if you need a hole in it, punch it. (that's why bed rails are riveted together) if you must drill it, heat the spot cherry red and cover with sand to allow it to cool very slowly. This will soften the steel by burning out some of the carbon, However, it also removes most of the strength at that point.
Yea, I know, it's been used for every bucks down project known to man or redneck, but that don't make it right. leave it under the bed...

thanks red caddy, thats some good info to know.
Chubby, are you suggesting having the board's rail (the edge of the board) sit on the car? So it would be vertical, in a sense. |

Scratch the fabricated surfboard rack idea. i realized i could use the softop roof rack that i use on my civic, for my baja. It just took some looking at. Well i guess first i have to drive out to the coast to make sure that 1) the board dosnt block wind from the cooler and 2) that the board stays put.

i was thinking of how boats have those big ass roll cage looking deals with the do-mah-atchies on the side that holes the wake boards in place. Make something similar that you can remove from your roof rack with some quick release pins or something. then when your out tearing up mother earth you can use your rack for what you need and if you go tearing up the surf then you can just slap on your board holder and carry however many boards you need. I realize it would be some work involved, but it would be cool. You might even be able to find the "holder" some where and just have to make it adapt to your rack.

maybe something like this. obviously you would have to custom make something that fits your boards correctly. Perhaps throw DirtGhost a PM and see if he could make you something for cheap. I think it would be kick ass!!

Chubby- that might be cool to have, once i get a roof rack. I would be a little nervous having the boards hanging over the side of my car b/c i would be concerned that i might hit something with them b/c they would probably sit out further then the fenders.
That would be pretty cool though. That way, i could have a rack full of all the essentials needed, plus my boards. Which reminds me, im going on a surfing/camping trip next week and i cant wait (im very new to surfing btw. i have been out maybe ten times)
On another note, i got some other things done.
Almost killed the baja and probably would of hurt a friend and my self going into a corner too fast. The back end came around and i made just the right amount of correctments to get the car to come to a stop in the middle of the road, 90* sideways to the direction of the road. On the bad side, i would of gone off a 30+ foot cliff and into some trees. So i got about 3 feet away from lucky there. Heres a pic. My finger is pointing the the rear tire marks made by the car where it came to a stop sideways.
I got two more speakers hung up on the roll cage. I used some box speakers from an in home sound system. I cut the boxes in half so they didnt hang so far down. I need to cover up the back side so they get a better bass sound from them.
And i hung a "TOYOTA" emblem from the rear bumper (like i see a lot of rice burners doing), just to intimidate the yodas around me. i did out wheel a few of them bassterds any way. :P

By the way, i was hanging out in the baja with a cute babe tonight and all i have to say is, "Its great to have a baja and a lil' country queen to keep me company".
I got to go to bad now, the surf is supposed to be bomb tomorrow am. |

Today i cruised out to the coast in the baja to do some surfing. Had a good time surfing even though some of then waves are way too big for me. Any way, after that i went on a small wheeling trip on the way home. I went out on these cow pastures/rolling hills that went on for a pretty good distance. There where some pretty good hill climbs up to the summit of the tallest mountain out there. I managed to snag a few photos with my phone too. I lost my muffler out there. but that has led me into a debate. I just got my last pay check for the summer and from now on out im only going to be working 14 hrs. a week. lame. So i kind of want to blow about $500 of it on something. For the last few days i was really considering getting some 30x9.5 KM2's for the back. That comes out to $460. But now that i have this muffler problem, i am considering getting a Tri-Mil ceramic coated exhaust with the S/S muffler on it. Then i will have some monies left over for the tires.
so im split on that. Heres some pics of todays adventures.
The white out back ground should be the pacific ocean, but it had a thick blanket of fog on it that only rose up only about 500 ft off the water, I was at about 1500ft elevation, so it kind of gave me the feeling of being in an air plane, high above the clouds. It was cool!
If you look at the bottom of the clif you can see what looks like a landing ramp. The only thing i can imagine this is for is mountain bikes. Cray mother's
ps. when i was on top of this hill i looked out over the valley and could see some one over there. I grabbed my binoculars and found a naked woman
strange place for skinny dipping?

Scratch the new muffler or new tires idea. I took my board off the baja this morning and found a nice crack that goes across the top of it.

Yeah chubby, i didn't even consider that. I was just so bummed that my board broke in half yesterday.
I took a good look at it and i guess i can weld it back on. It will be kind of okie but i guess it will work. |
