So im itchen to go wheeling this weekend. Any one from the north bay area?? If so let me know. Some friends of mine where thinking of going up to Cow Mt. this weekend. I'll probably be up there, but none of my friends have VW's, just a bunch of yodas. Any way let me know if you want to go and i can give you directions if you need.

Holy crap, I have that same hood, but with a bugeye nose piece. Did you end up selling it? They seem like a pretty rare item.

No i still have it. Yeah they are pretty rare. out side of mine, yours is the only other one i have ever seen. Im kind of tempted to keep it since its so rare. maybe use it on my one day Street Baja.

Well i got a good look at a bug today that im probably going to buy from a friend. Im going to take everything off my bug and put it on the new one. I wish i had pics of it but i didnt think to bring my camera. Its a turquoise colored 73' so it has IRS. I didnt mention it before but i kind of want to blog about this problem ive had with trying to get an IRS pan for my yellow baja.
About a year and a half ago i gave the guy i bought my baja from $400 of $600 for an IRS pan swap we made plans to do. He was going to take the body off a 69' he has and put new floors in it, coat them with spray on bed liner and give me a good working transmission. We where going to do the whole project at his house since i dont have room for a body life at my house (nor the neighbors patients). He told me he had to finish a restoration project which would take about 3 more months, and that i would be rewarded for my patients. Then he asked if i could fork over some money at the time since he was really broke from doing the restoration project. I was an idiot and did it, i though i could trust him since he trusted me by letting me make payments on the baja when i bought it from him. Well here i am a year and a half later, still with no IRS and it dosent seem like its going to come any time in the near future since its starting to rain and he's taking on more projects. I also realized that my body has too much rust for me to want to fix and, if the body where taken of the pan, i would be stuck with welding new heater channels in it because they are so...well its not there on the rear passenger side. So thats the end of my blogging and the end of doing an IRS pan swap.

The only problem with the new bug is that it has rust at the lower corners of the rear window.

I got my baja-to-be home today. :D Ill let the pics speak for them self.

Im excited to start a baja from stock form. I didnt get to do this with my yellow bug so this will be a learning experiance. More to come....

Looks like a fun project. I just got working on mine today. Pulled the body off the pan. I need to replace the passanger pan but it should be fun. Are there some good places to go wheelin near santa rosa? Im about and hour and 20 from santa rosa.

thesatelliteguy Sat Nov 21, 2009 11:09 pm

Up in Ukiah there is cow mountain. Its a really fun place to go rip around. They have free camping and a lot of trails. its about an hour and a half north of santa rosa. its also nice because my honda civic that is lowered a bit can make it to the campgrounds. It'll be scrapin all over, but its only dirt. I want to get a bunch of VW's up there some time. Its usually Jeep rock crawlers and Yodas.

I noticed this about the new bug. the clutch cable tube is broken. What shoudl i do about it, just weld it back together?

Skidmark Sun Nov 22, 2009 9:59 am

Go hydraulic! 8)

(it is sooo easy spending other people's money!!)

Nachodaddy77 Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:31 am

that looks like a fun winter project. what are you planning on doing with the rust in the back window?

About the clutch tube i say weld it up and see how it holds up. im not sure how indepth it is to replace it but maybe just cut it out of your old baja

thesatelliteguy Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:43 pm

Hydraulic. Thats a good idea. for now i guess i will weld it up.

That sounds fun. I need to get this thing going. Does your car need to be registered to play there?

You don't have to be licensed, but you do need a green sticker. It closes sometimes in the winter months during heavy rain/run-off as an erosion control.

I got some work done today. Took the wire out of the front. i wnated to take the whole wiring harness completely out but i couldnt get it out of the C pillar. I assume the foam that is in there is holding it in place. i want to take that foam out. Does any one know how to do that? i can only guess you have to cut the inside of the C pillar out to get to it, then weld the cut out back into place when done.

Hole.

i will be patching this tomorrow.

I also took out the rear heater "Y" that comes into the cabin from the "fire wall", right next to the rear torsion bar tubes. I then took a leaf blower and a shop vac to the heater channels to make sure they are real clean. I want the heater to work really well. I hated driving around in my last bug with out heaters. I felt like sardiens in there with my Carhartt jacket and my driving gloves on. Its also one of the reasons the woman wont ride in it.

Tomorrow i plan on patching the hole and a few others in the dash, then start to clean the rust off for spray on bed liner.

nilza Tue Nov 24, 2009 4:15 am

I gotta know, Whats the hole for?

Nachodaddy77 Tue Nov 24, 2009 4:55 am

Yeah wtf is that hole for? maybe its a glory hole lol,

thesatelliteguy Tue Nov 24, 2009 10:09 am

i have no idea what the hole is for. My friend i got the car from said the guy he got the car from said it was for a speaker. I find it odd that the he did the nice work with the dash but could only use tin snips to make a hole there. I dont know.

thesatelliteguy Tue Nov 24, 2009 1:28 pm

I just got my bed liner. Its called Hippo Liner. Its a Canadian product we use at the shop i work at. I figure if its worth going on a $60,000+ restored Willys truck its worth my $3000 Baja bug. I also got some fiberglass, resin and some rust preventer. i think the big hole in my cowel (the one in the pic above) will get fiberglassed. but im still not sure. Maybe i'll try welding it first.
I hope i will get to bed liner the interior this weekend. Im going to get a friend to help me too since the pot time (amount of time between mixing bed liner and it solidifying in the bucket) is only about 30 min. I hope i have enough for the wheel wells too.

thesatelliteguy Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:49 pm

I just got done patching a hole in the floor pan and the hole in the cowle. I realized after i patched the hole that i didnt take a before pic, but heres the after pic.

I lap welded it instead of a butt weld because i was afraid i would just make holes on the floor side, but the floor metal didnt really make any holes. Now im wondering how i will get rid of the excess sheet metal on the bottom. I really dont want to weld upside down under the car. I might take some tin snips to it to try to clean it up some.

I also the hole in the cowle patched. here's a pic.

Im proud of my self for the welds too. just so you all know.
They look good.

Nachodaddy77 Wed Nov 25, 2009 7:34 am

looks alot better than most of my welds. what type of welder and gas or flux core wire? cant wait io see it done
