So i didnt do any thing i said i was going to do. I got my cage temporarily fitted in. I dented the upper A pillar so the cage can be further forwards, they need a little more work. Then i think i will be able to roll the windows up and down with the door closed. I have a few other things to do to the body before i weld the cage in, but i cant remember all of them right now. One of them is make tabs that come off the heater channel to connect to the cage for better body support. I think i will also put some on the upper A, B, and C pillars.

One piece hood got put on today too.

My neighbor came out and was admiring the bondo work under the rear window so that reminded me to finish up that job. I got the big holes filled in. I just wonder how long they will hold.
(in this pic i had already bondoed up the big holes and sanded the bondoe down. The little bondo poops you see are the final coat of bondo to fill the smaller holes.)

I also got the doors temporarily hung so i can work on them and not have them sitting on the ground.

I gutted the driver side and found a nice crack that makes me think i will need a new door.

I might use the 67's if i cant find a spare.

Cleaned up the door lock mechanism and lubed it up.

I am lucky enough to work this friday (never thought id say this) YAY!! :D so took some measurements of the felt window channel/track and i will see if the channel we sell at work will fit. It will be a LOT cheaper then buying the correct stuff from chirco.

i made the mistake of buying my cylinder at autozone. i didnt know it was bad for sure but i replaced everything else so it had to be the master. turns out they know their remans are junk great company sacrifacing peoples safety like that

Today i tried to put my motor in and ran into a problem. I have an early style pressure plate and a late style trans. The motor wont bolt up because of this so my who operation has stopped.
I have two options. Please give me your opinion. Keep in mind im on a budget and have very little work (4 hrs a week)

1 My friends has a transmission in his car he will give me, but then i will have to spend time putting his trans in my car and putting my trans in his car. (his car isnt a runner right now, but its going to be turned into a baja beeter for around his property). Then try to return the $45 throw out bearing i just installed in my current trans. (they might take it back, they might not [-o< )

2 Buy a late style pressure plate, bolt it up and be good to go.

A few things to think about while making a decision:
-My current clutch/pressure plate/fly wheel are brand new, a lot less then 1k miles on them
-I just bought a $45 throw out bearing for the late style trans and put it on. Im not sure i can return it.

Here's something else BIG to consider before i (or you) make a decision:
I want to go with a bus trans some day soon. Im not sure weather to get a 002 or a 091. Either way, i dont want to buy parts twice, meaning i dont want to go out and buy the LATE style pressure plate for my car, and then have to get an EARLY style pressure plate when the bus trans is ready.
Are you picking up what im laying down?
As always, any help is appreciated.

so why cant you use the clutch fork and t/o bearing from your old car? just a thought.

chubby53 Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:14 pm

ok dude, this is my opinion. being on a tight budget myself if i were you i would do whatever is cheapest. swapping trannys(especially irs) isn't that time consuming, plus on your car the engine is already out anyways. Do what you can for less $$ now and i think you'll be happier in the long run. Plus if you save 10, 20,100 bucks now, you can use that money for something else later. Oh , i always thought you could interchange the throw out bearing shaft. I hope so, i had planned on doing that with mine.

Nachodaddy77 Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:38 pm

im thinking chubby is right its not that hard to swap irs trannys i would go that route

thesatelliteguy Mon Dec 14, 2009 9:35 am

Thank you gentlemen. I think i will just swap the throw out fork and let you guy know how it goes.

neanders Mon Dec 14, 2009 9:49 am

Before you start tearing things apart, let's think this through for a sec:

1) What year is your tranny?
2) What year is your PP? It is one of the 3-arm plates, or a diaphragm plate?
3) Does your TO bearing slide over a sleeve on the input shaft or not?

The reason I ask is I ran into something similar. There are a couple options:

1) Remove the sleeve from the input shaft
2) Remove the collar from the PP (assuming it's a diaphragm)
3) Exchange your TO bearing (which you said is new) for the right one.

In any case, I'm not sure you hafta swap your TO arm...

Just my $.02

thesatelliteguy Mon Dec 14, 2009 5:10 pm

Well neanders i appreciate you two pennies, but i just got done for the day and the motor is in and running. I took the throw out fork and bearing off the swingalxe trans and swaped them with the IRS trans. I removed the collar from the irs trans and it seems like it works. I didnt drive any where because its not ready for any of that yet.

Here's what else i got done doing today.

Fuel tank and electric pumped installed and hooked up.
Drilled holes for my headlight switch, wiper switch, oil warning light, generator light, fuel switch, and the big ol' battery cut off switch. I'll get some pics tomorrow. The dash looks awesome.

I got the rear lights wiring hooked up. I just need to weld some stubs on the out side of the C pillar so the engine cover can be mounted. (the engine cover holds the lights)

Thats about it. Wiring is really time consuming.
pics to come

andychrist77 Mon Dec 14, 2009 6:14 pm

I like the bed liner look, I am doing the same thing with mine. I am taking it down to bare metal then slapping it on, I hope it will also cut down on the tin can full of rocks sound I was getting when driving around town.

thesatelliteguy Tue Dec 15, 2009 7:03 pm

Well i have been busting my ass and back all day working on the wiring. Im almost done but decided to come inside and eat. I hate having to take time to do that.
Any way i got some pics to show off what the dash looks like now. The kill switch isnt hooked up yet. The few extra feet of cable im going to need for that will be pricey.

Sorry for the over exposure. The camera ist nisch gut

Some pics of the fuel tank installed. i really like how it sticks out just a little further then what remains of the inner fender well.

The volt. regulators home

The motor is in and running. I need to find a place to temporarily mount the coil until i get my bumped re-constructed. Im replacing the tubing that connects to the fire wall.

chubby53 Tue Dec 15, 2009 7:55 pm

hey i was cleaning my shop again, seems like i clean more than i work on my car. anyways, I found a bunch of that rubber that i used for my dash protector. If you want some, if you pay shipping, i'll send you a good size chunk. let me know.

thesatelliteguy Wed Dec 16, 2009 7:53 pm

This morning i got to take it out for its maiden voyage around the neighborhood. I have to say, it was quite fun driving around with no windows, it was kind of like being on a motorcycle and being comfertable at the same time. Every thing works ok, but i get the feeling one of the soft brake lines is stuffing up, it seems like it dosent want to let the brakes off. I also noticed a difference in its accelerating. I came booming up my hill and was able to grab third, i never could of done that with the swing axle. At first i thought it was because it didnt have any glass in it.

So for the rest of the day i have been working on my rear bumper. Im not sure if i mentioned this before, but i want to reconstruct the part that goes to the fire wall.It will be a one piece hoop with no welds other than the two tubes that come down from the bottom of it to connect it to the rest of the bumper.

I found this really cool calculator a few months ago that gives you a printable pattern that you cut out and mark your tubing with and you can cut a perfect fish mouth onto the tubing. I was really excited to use it since i only have a right angle grinder to notch tubing with, and it use to take me about 45 min. to cut one notch. With the pattern cut out it takes about 5-7 min. and they are a perfect fish mouth. Here's the web link
http://metalgeek.com/static/cope_custom.pcgi
Just remember to set your tubing size correctly, it starts you in 1 inch tubing.

So far i have made a notched tube that connects the roll cage supports together.

Then i cut holes in the fire wall for the bumper brackets and tack welded them in spot.

Then i tack welded on the bolting flanges. These dam things where expensive as hell!! $8 a piece and i need 4. :x

Any one know where to get these bolting flanges online? Im sure i can get them cheaper then the shop i got them from. That shop wanted $12 a foot for 1.5 inch .095 mild steel tubing. I bought some today from a different shop for $3 a foot.

Tomorrow i plan on getting it partially road legal and taking it to a muffler shop to have them bend up the rear bumper hoop. Hope i dont get busted by the popo's for not having windows. jk

chubby53 Wed Dec 16, 2009 9:07 pm

looks good, that's a bad ass formula pattern deal. I'll probably be using it also. thanks for sharing it.

$12 to $3 is a BIG jump, are you sure you bought the same stuff at that price?? and for the flanges and such... this is a bit better but i've heard of a place even better but don't have the link

That crossed my mind, because that is a pretty big mark up. I guess its possible the guy gave me the wrong price.
Thanks for the link to dans performance. i didnt think to check there. there's a few other things i saw i could use.

Well i just had a fun little outing in my new baja. I got everything on it i need for it to look road legal and went off into town to have some tubing bent up for my rear bumper. I get about a mile down the road and it starts to act like its running out of gas. So i shut it off and pull over. I check the fuel filter and there is no fuel in it. i switch my fuel pump on and check again. Now fuel is flowing. So i start on my way again. About another mile down the road, it does this again. same procedure and i check for kinks in the fuel line. We take off again and another mile down the road.....
so i ignorantly keep on going determined to get to town to get my bumper tube made, stopping every mile or so to let the carb fill back up with fuel.

Well i got about half way there and decided that it wouldnt be too smart to try to drive through city streets only being able to go one mile at a time. So i turned back around.

I finally decided to pull over and try to fix my problem since i wasnt that far from home now. It turns out my metal line that goes from the front to that rear was clogged. Thank god i brought my whole roll of bailing wire.

so that was a fun day. I think im just going to watch TV and drink beer for that rest of the night.

I had a similar experience with a ball of carpet in my fuel tank after building a trunk carpet kit for a street bug...
HOORAY BEER!
