View original topic: not sure which bolt inside engine bay is starter bolt.

i have step by step instructions from the type2 website but i am not sure which bolt is the "upper right engine to tranny bolt". i am assuming that is the one just to the right of the top center most bolt but am not sure.

i have pictures of the wiring and whatnot so it should be easy to rewire once i put a new one in. i am also planning to take the current starter with me to the auto parts store to hopefully match it with the right one. when i look it up on their site they claim to have one but have heard of people having issues with the ones they buy from autozone like places not fitting.

thanks for any help!

With the passenger side of the vehicle as the right hand side, reach around to the forward side of the fan shroud.

In that cramp difficult to access space between the shroud firewall is the top right of the engine case. In this difficult to reach compartment - you'll find a 17mm nut that has been tightened to the "special" bolt - which secures the top of the starter to the engine.

It would be much easier to show you if we both had our Bentley Manuals in front of us. Until then get a mirror and a shop light.

You should check out Ratwell's site.

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/EngineRemoval.html

Look at step #15. Has a description and pictures. As you know a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Looking into the engine compartment from the back the nut is just to the left of the aircleaner preheat bowl right beside where the fuel line comes through the tin. This assumes your aircleaner is removed or you have X-ray vision :)

If this is a 1972 or later Bus - disregard my instructions.

Yeah - what type of engine do you have, there?

And I, for one, don't like Ratwell's engine removal procedure. I prefer to unbolt the transaxle at its hanger, and lower it and the engine together, at an angle. Then, supporting the transaxle on blocks, I unbolt the engine from the transaxle (which bolt is which will be apparent at that point) and slip the engine off the splined shaft at an angle, and then pull it out from under the bus. That is for a Type IV engine.

That would certainly be a lot of work to take the starter out.

73 westy with a 2.0 replacement GE code block.

Im pretty sure with the pix/info from this thread I can figure out which bolt it is now. Ill go take a look and return with any problems.

No, see, this way you don't have to take the starter out, remove the clutch cable, or any of that. The only extra work is taking out the transaxle hanger bolts, but that's not hard.

The other main advantage is that you don't have to take off any tin, or even the coil... the tilting of the engine downwards allows for clearance of all that.

It's the nut just forward of the throttle body, attached to the bolt coming through the firewall tin. 17 mm. Its companion is on the left side, in an analogous position.
