ive searched and found nothing, the splitty forum has one, so tell them why Bays over Splitty, forgive me if there is one already , ill delete if so.
-Bays already come freeway ready and dont need bug tannys. :?
-more room/more comfort
-parts a bit cheaper
...lots more but ill save you some.

Uh, neither to splits.

it will run but the motor will wind up like a mofo. c'mon thats why 80% of the Splitty cats ive ever met put freeway fliers on their shit, quit putting on a show and get with it fella. p.s. im talking top speed not some mountain climbing shit, not here in Los Angeles.

Classic styling with modern safety features. See the (locked) thread about Colin's accident. Had that been in a split (or even early bay) chances are he would've been seriously injured.

Reinforced front end
Disc brakes
Type IV engine

I had a split and I LOVED it. Was just fine on the freeway. I want another one.

- 2.0 FI is nice in my bay.
- They are easier to find and cheaper.
- IRS is nice.
- Disc brakes are good.
- Hydraulic lifters are nice.

But to be honest, for the same price, and in the same condition... I'd get a split in a heartbeat. Maybe put that 2.0 in there and call it best of both worlds. If I had a 2-car garage I would be actively looking for a splitty project, but I only have room for one bus right now.

Actually, the gearing in 4th is about the same between big nut RGB and Bay transmissions. And they all use about the same size tire.

Big nut=.82X4.125X1.26=4.26
OR Big nut=.82X4.375X1.26=4.52
002 3-rib=.82X5.375=4.41
002 5 rib=.89X4.857=4.32

These differences give a ~200 rpm spread at 60 mph. No big deal. The bigger deal is the pussies, Split or Bay, who get all scared hearing a motor turning 4K rpm.

Hope they don't hide it. Nice scenery looking out thru a big unobstructed bay window. My T-1 Bay does the pass with no problem. How about Big Bear? Going up you see all the crazies not enjoying the drive. Going down you appreciate the power disc brakes and improved handling.

No comparison in accident safety. O-yea, then there's that topic of creature comfort. Bay's win

Truck, the Bay is a better truck. I loved my '67 Westy. But I'm on my 3rd Deluxe Bay and my 2nd Bay Westy. They have more cabin room for haulin' shit and sleeping. The splitties have the "style" if you will. But the Bay gets more crap from here to there with more comfort.

whc03grady Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:35 pm

Bays
Bigger windshield
Windows that roll down
Power output that's almost appropriate to the vehicle (except for disk brakes on the '71s, Type I-powered bays might as well be Splitties IMHO--I'm only talking about Type IV-powered Bays here)
Some semblance of legroom up front
Safer ('73 and later)

Splitties
Better looking/ineffable coolness

theizzardking Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:40 pm

i agree,

splits for the style
bays for the miles (long hauls)

dreadnotmusic Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:43 pm

I like that I can find one mostly complete and nearly rust free for under $5k. Try that with a split!

Slammer Thu Oct 29, 2009 3:04 pm

Stirrin' sh*t up again!

IVE got to, the splitty cats are always on a high , even if some are my buddies.
heres another...already 12 volt from the factory, take that!! Ben Pon would be proud!! 8)

babysnakes Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:58 pm

Hey, if you need to save a few bucks. It's easier to put a T-1 in a late bay than a t-4 in a splitty. :D

redwagon Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:02 pm

I don't consider myself a "bus guy", but my Dad and both of his brothers have always had bay window busses, so they are just familiar to me. I can apprecaite a nice splitty but my dream bus has always been a double slider bay panel.

hcottam Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:22 pm

I've been driving a bus as my daily since 1989 (when I turned 17). I drove a 13 window '66 until about 1999 and then traded by buddy for a '77 westy deluxe and have never regretted the trade. I am always going camping with my wife and two kids (ages 2 and 6) and I don't think we would fit as comfortable in a splitty. I also really enjoy the front power disc brakes.

That being said, I am currently restoring a '59 single cab and love to cruise it down 101 on Saturday morning.

I appreciate all busses and find it hard to say I like one generation better than the other.

Harry
