The PO's PO of my 73 super decided it would be fun to add all sorts of goodies to his car and when he was done with them, leave all sorts of wiring and switches. I took out my dash and removed about 30 feet of wires and 3 switches all which led to nowhere. When i put it back together everything worked except the turnsignals. The hazards still work but when i turn the switch for the turn signal theres no click and no lights. I really need to get this car back on the road. Any help would be more than appreciated.

Go down to the local junkyard and find the signal switch. I had the same thing happen to me, and I ran down to the local junkyard and snagged one...everything works now.

No such thing as a vdub in a junkyard by me. Gotta love the midwest. I dont think its the switch B/C i can still use it to dim my headlights.

I could dim my headlight with my faulty one too..That sucks =/..you may ping someone in your areas that has a scrap one and see if they have the switch..

maybe its the switch, if i cant find anything wrong with the wiring i'll try that. Its just wierd you know, after using it for 8 months daily and then after i plug everything back in, this is what doesnt work? Thanks for the tip.

so i realized the number 12 fuse kept blowing whenever i turned on the car. Alls that is going to this fuse is a two green wires with one spade. One of the green wires goes to the speedo and one to the hazard. Also there is a smaller gauge black wire. I dont know why this fuse is blowing. Could this be the cause of my turn signal problem? This is real frustrating!

i understand thats the problem but i dont understand why. The number twelve fuse has a wire running to the back of the speedo but i believe it is for fuel gauge operation. the other green wire (they run off the same spade) runs to the back of the hazard (which still works when the fuse is blown). I removed all the wires except the green one(S) from the circuit and it still blew a fuse. Why? And HOW is this messing up my turn signal??????

Remove the green wire that runs to the back of the hazards. And put it on a different 12amp spade. Tell us what happens. :-k

ok so one of the green wires off the spade was wrinkled and at various points had melted its seld to other wires. however, the casing on the green wire melted through to the bare wires and the casing on the other wires hadnt melted all the way through. So I put electrical tape on the various points that it had melted and when i tried again, it still blew a fuse. unless somebody can help me out here I think im going to have to pull the dash out AGAIN and search all my wires AGAIN. I hate electrical work.

Did you try my advice? Separate the green cables, don't keep them at the same fuse, separate them.

Number 12 fuse is for Horn, Stop Lights and Brakes warning lights and it should have an 8amp fuse. Take one of the green ones out of there and put it in any other fuse (that is not #9 or #10, because those are 16amps). And see what happens, this way you can isolate the problem by trial and error.
Here's the Fuse Box leyend: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/74busfuses.jpg
good luck!! Go Yankees!! hehe :D |

Duh!! you mentioned that there's a green cable going to the flashers on 12? That's your problem, the flashers need to go to #8 because it should be 16amp not 8amps....I think!! , you confused me now!! :?

ok well i tried what you said and put one of the wires to a different fuse. The one i moved was the one that leads to the back of the speedo. I kept the wire from the back of the hazard on 12. Turn the car on and no blown fuses. However now my fuel gauge doesnt work and the turn signal light is always on. It blinks when i engage the actual signals or hazard, but otherwise stays lit.

You might take a good look at the hazard switch. That switch on my '71 sort of came apart where the crimped metal body holds the bakelite bottom of the switch. This made the turn signals inoperative. I was able to remove the switch, re-assemble, and re-peen the crimps and all is well.
Just a thought, good luck, Mondshine

My friend, I'm all out of ideas, if it was me, I would keep testing relays and swapping the cables around. ](*,)
