| Hi, I would like to tow my 1969 Beetle behind my 1975 GMC Motorhome. I have one of the "standard" VW tow bars that attach to the lower front axle tube but that's a pain to have to take on and off. I would like to make up a couple of brackets and bolt them to the front bumper mounts and fabricate a tow bar that hinges from them that I can just fold up. Blue Ox makes a tow bar that bolts to the front axle that does this but it costs $$$! I have "heard" that this is not a good idea. I've looked at where the bumper brackets bolt to the body up inside the trunk and it looks fairly substantial; after all the bumper IS bolted there. Having said that I may be all wet and would appreciate comments. Thanks, Rob |

Hey Spaceman, Glad you found the vw net. Very good one. I have asked a similar question in the off road section but have not gotten an answer that will fit what I want to do. I want to hook to the axle with a permanant set of mounts. I bet you get your answer here.

It'll most likely pull with out any problems but the first time you have to jam on the brakes for something the weight of the bug is going to crumple your front end. The bumper is only attached to the body and not onto the frame like most other cars; it'll hold up to some light banging, but all 1800+lbs of german goodness will mess things up in a full pucker type situation.
Tow bars can be a pain, but shy of a trailer they are the best way. |
