i have a standard 74 beetle. can someone please tell me what wires i need to get the dang thing cranked. im not a wiring guru by anymeans but i can get the job done if i have a hint here and there. i'm not worried about the lights working just yet because it is still a work in progress. the previous owner made a rats nest out of the trunk and i'm in the process of organizing the wires a little better and have somehow pull the wrong wire, it doesnt help that when he painted the car he painted over everywire so they are the same color. (and yes i have a wiring diagram but thats getting me no where with the ignition) :x

Well, the wiring diagram is your best hope. It contains all the information you need.

If you want the car to ever be nice, you might think about replacing the wiring harness. Then at least you can see what you're doing.

Here's the diagram for your car:

and the key:

The ignition swich is component "D". Wiring that switch up will probably get you most of the way there.

I've replaced a harness on a 74 standard beetle - it's my daily driver now, because of that.

If your harness is in bad shape, it may well be easier to replace the entire harness rather than track down each little problem. It's not a simple job, but you can do it with a wiring diagram and a weekend.

to start the car you need 12 volts to the coil (blue/green wire I think)

and 12 volts to the starter (and solenoid to crank it)
