Hi everybody,
I would like to know what the container under the right rear of my 73 Super Beetle fender is, two thick hoses going to the air filter and has a gas line coming in from the gas tank up front. I think it has to do with the gas enrichment in the choke phase. I drove super beetle's in Germany but never saw that kind of a box under the fenders, might be an North-American set-up.
Any suggestions or comments,
Thanks

| That is for evaporative emissions. It is a charcoal canister. It collects gasoline fumes from the fuel tank and "sends" them, or stores them, to the carburetor to be burned. Just like a new car, without the check engine light to tell you your fuel cap is loose. It reduces hydrocarbon emissions from fuel vapors exiting the fuel tank. |

Leave it in place. However, one hose should go to the upper right part of the fan shroud and one to the air cleaner.

| I have a 1974 super beetle witht the canister can. Though the top broke and spilled all the charcoal and is currently strapped on with the fumes just escaping. It smells like gas everywhere when the car is on. Does my model have a line from the canister to the fan shroud? I did get a used one from the junkyard from a similiar model, is there anyway to change the charcoal within, and if so how? If not, how could I test the used can? Thanks |

| I took mine off my 73. Still runs ok and no smell inside. To me it was just something else to have to hassel with so I took it off. |

Did you plug the lines going to the canister can? I still have mine hooked up with the top plate facing the engine broken |
