Is it the cable or something else? I think it is the cable, I hope it is the cable lol.... When I undid the clutch cable adjuster wing nut and the cable was loose but wouldn't pull out that way, but havent taken Bowden tube off yet

I have not pulled pedal assembly out yet as I am confused about how to go about it. Haynes book is just not clear. I mean I get the remove the two bolts bit but I am not sure how to take off the brake pin. book says remove piston push rod from master brake cylinder ( or something like that) but they do not say how to do that so I am stumped....

I just had engine out just last week on a different issue and I looked at fork just to be on the safe side and it all looked fine with no cracks, so hoping it is not that..... but the pedal was crunching a bit when depressed a bit before whatever went let go.

there is a spring between the acc. pedal and the brake (11) get a mental note on how it is in before you remove it. look and see where both ends are. one end wraps around the pin on the brake pedal where the pushrod is. you can remove that from the pin but it is a PIA. when you take the two bolts out that hold the pedal assembly the other end of the spring will release tension and then you can remove it from the brake pin and remove the pushrod. there should be locking clip (4) on the pin also but i have seen some not replaced after working on the brakes. dont be alarmed but the brake push rod (3) is not connected to the master cylinder and will come out.

If you don't put #4 back on you will lose your brakes & maybe someones life.

Hey thanks for that exploded pic, it will help alot.

As for the #4 item... I dont recall even seeing that on there yet, but there is still some 40 years of gunk to clean off, I am sure it is hiding in there somewhere....

thanks for the help and I will check back as I work along.

:)

Wise to post this question and we are here to help. #4 is there and under all of the stuff. I even took my seat out to make access easier.
When you get it out clean it all up like new you will be very happy.

Just knowing that the brake master cylinder shaft is not attached on the other side makes the whole removing of the pedal cluster job easy peasy!

This just came up in another thread, someone needed to replace the clutch cable. I did a write-up:

If you mean the pedal came all the way towards the driver and hit the floor, then check the pedel stop. (item 17 in the picture) If bolt 20 is tight you may need to put a washer under 17 to raise it up so the pedals don't go over the top of it.

es, i did find this, thanks so much! I had a busy day, will try tomorrow to get it apart. It definetely is getting a good cleaning job, maybe replacement (depends on how badly corroded and rusted away, hopefully will clean up nice as yours did)

I did this:

Thank you so much! those are so helpful!

(Though I did laugh at the having to use gloves with the grease part "this stuff is just nasty".
As a kid, I hated doing housework so I would wander into the garage to get out of it, where my dad would put me to work, plunking a glob of grease in one hand and a bearing in the other and would say "get to work" LOL
(must be what's wrong with me.... )

just had the same issue. there is a stopper bolt on the floor that keep the pedal vertical. NR17 on picture

SO, this was the problem.....

Cusser Sun Nov 01, 2009 2:30 pm

Wow - look how much more corroded your stuff is than mine (see photo below, of course, I'm in Arizona). I caught mine BEFORE the hook broke.
.

That part of the pedal is available separately, the part I'm holding in my photo.

Yeah, I have only had her a bit over a year now. Her window seals were rock hard and leaked big time, plus she musta sat somewhere hot for a long time as her windshield had formed some big air bubles within the glass.

I am gonna just buy a whole new assembley and decide what to do with this one besides clean it up. Doubt I'll need two....

Cailleac Bhuer Sun Nov 01, 2009 2:38 pm

What is wierd is tha tthe hook itself did not wear bad, but it sure bent and the pot metal gave. PO told me he used to pop wheelies with her.... I feel so sorry for my poor old bug.....

Cailleac Bhuer Sun Nov 01, 2009 3:23 pm

I dont think this will ever clean up... LOL

mnussbau Sun Nov 01, 2009 4:36 pm

You'd be surprised...take a Dremel or wire wheel brush and most of that crap will come off. Might take a while in your case, but anyway. Then add some spray paint, new brake spring and pedal pads and it'll look like this (with new clutch pedal shaft):

Cailleac Bhuer Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:13 pm

Yeah, my kid is taking it up to his his dads shop ( Howton's) and they will see what all can be done with it.
I could see it was icky before and knew a day would come when I had to pull it out, but WOW, I really was shocked at how bad it got... I should pulled it off when she was being painted right after I got her....
