ok this is my first vw but not my first old car. i know how things go when cars have been passed threw many hands and each person does their own touches to it. so here is what ive got so far. i was told it was a 73, ended up being a 71. the body is in really amazing shape, and is the reason i got it. it does not run, it turns freely, just doesnt run on its own. they guy i bought it from said it was an 1800 motor with some timing issues. i got it, played with it for a day and it has more than timing issues. now after playing around and doing some research i have also found out the engine might not be what it was said to be. the engine code is D0764370, now according to a few websites this is a 1200 from 1970. i just want to make sure i was reading the info correctly, can anyone back me up with the engine code? also if this is a 1200 motor what are my options with this? i knew the motor was an issue and figured i would build another one with this case, are the 1200 and 1600 cases different? or is a 1600 just a machined out 1200? i want to know if i need to start looking for a 1600 case for a performance build? thanks for any help you guys have.

While that engine began its life as a 1200, but I've seen later D-blocks built with larger internals. At some point VW started making the D-series identical to 1600 blocks and used thicker cylinders and the old 64mm crank in it. So yours could very well be have been built up larger.

1970 - actually the 1971 model year started with D0676000, so that's a 1971 block , that would be dual relief, so that's good. I believe the D-case got that when the other engines did. It all depends on how much wear and tear and how well the engine was built as to if there will be any issues.
