Does anyone know if the '79 came with stock front foot well speaker panels.

Being a large 6 foot guy, the set that is in my foot wells are in the way. If I remove these, other than the door panels where else can I easily stick a set of speakers in the fornt passenger compartment. Where were the located when new in '79

Thanks
Greg

No they didn't and that's probably the best option for speaker location. Post some pics of it.

I would investigate those aftermarket panels. My SB Convertible is a 1971, a flat-window one, and my front speakers are external mount, see photo below. Yours is a curved window SB, so yours will be different.

Other than my dog Rufus, I rarely have anyone in the back seat of my '79. The PO of my car installed speakers in the door panels, unfortunately the constant shutting of the doors eventually loosened the speakers. I ended up replacing the door panels [no more holes] and I run a pair of boxed speakers that reside under the front seats in the foot wells. They have been working pretty good for me for the last 20 years.

I have a 69 vert. Two speakers under the back seat in the panels beside the heater vents. Get narrow speakers so the one in front of the battery has room.

Also two speakers in the front on the sides of the foot wells. My vert has welded in structural panels in the foot wells. The driver side has a removable plate for access to the wiring harness. On the drivers side I removed the plate and enlarged the hole. I used the screw for the forward heater cable as the rear upper hole for speaker location. I used the same screw on the passenger side, and cut an access hole for the speaker. After drilling holes for the other 3 speaker screws, I ran the wires and then glued the carpet back on. Cut the carpet out and mount the speakers.

I bought blaupunkt speakers online for $35 for the front because they had the smallest depth.

I bet your car has the same or similar panels. My speakers stick out the width of the grill into the car - about 3/4 inch.

Only thing I'd do differently is poke holes in the carpet for the screws, and then use a screwdriver rather than an electric drill with a phillips bit. The screw caught the carpet and pulled some of the threads. Not badly, but you can tell if you look closely.
