The heatertube for windscreen must be placed when bottom is removed, otherwise impossible to fix it. That 10 cm tube inside in pointing backwards.

So the early channels did not have the collar on the top for the metal tube, but just a hole and the tube went inside and pointed to the back, and was fixed inside by that metal tab??

I will check (and photograph) the innards of the channels on my '51 when I take them out.

that is correct. One more place to have to modify on the WW Brazilian heater channels.

We used later era channels from a donor car and just ran the corrogated steel tube through the collar and welded it in place.

What is the inner diameter of the flex pipe? We sell a flexible pipe for exhaust at the parts store where I work. It is pretty long, at least 4 ft. Besides the metal tabs, is there anything special about it?

virtanen Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:53 pm

If I remember correct, the size is 32 mm.

One strange thing though is that both my splits (51 and 52) have heatertubes inside. Well, had... You could see the remains of the tubes inside...

Also could see they had the outlet in the channels and the heater risers in A-pillars too.

Split has heater tubes length of ca. 10 cm inside channel pointing backwards, it tries to catch air to wind screen... It is fixed to channel by that metal piece.

I am not certain that those tubes in the pic above are split. Mika, you are saying that the tube goes into the channel 10cm, then points to the back and that metal part is inside the channel? I say that because my '57 has those same tubes and the same type of bracket holding it at the bottom of the A pillar over the collar.

Perhaps the pic you posted is not actually a pair of split tubes and you just used it as an example?

I will look at my '51 tonight...

Those tubes with brackets in the pic looks exact similar than my split has. I have not the correct lenght in my files, and don't know when there happened some modifications for split. My january 1952 split has that original set-up: ca. 10 cm inside pointing back and has similar bracket fixed to channel.

Hebster52 Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:58 pm

My splits also have had the same kind of tubes, not sure about how they were connected to the heaterchannels as one of them did not have much left of the heaterchannels and not checked the other one that close yet to find out more about that area.

Pics from my '51. Looks like the protrusion is farther than 10cm, maybe 15-16cm. Rusted-wide-open splits show you a lot!!

you can buy those tubes in various sizes at any FLAPS or NAPA with a ghetto-rig exhaust section

Here a good picture of the heater pipe arrangement, borrowed from "Metalwizard's" album.
