View original topic: More power for my Mexi Bug?

Hi,

Because I live in on a mountain I'm always wishing that I had just a touch more power for climbing up the hills. She's fine when it's just me but as soon as I have a passenger I'm going to end up in first for the end of the climb.

So, I'm looking for suggestion as to what would be the easiest and yes, cheapest way to give my Mexican bug a little more power. When I replaced the muffler Antonio recommended the "sport" muffler. At most I noticed only a hint of difference.

Anyone else have a suggestion? I don't want to spend a fortune and I don't want to wake the neighbors....but I would like to step it up a notch.

Thanks,

Scottie

What size engine? I would think about an 019 distributor and dual carbs.

If you can find one, a Jacobs Electronics Omnipak with the silicone plug wire set will give you a couple more horses to the ground and a lot more low end torque. I bought mine directly from Jacobs before they were sold after reading about the OmniCoil in one of the mags. I put it on the dyno to see if it worked as well as I thought. After all, Jacobs offered a guarantee on it.

The dyno guy had little faith in it since he saw all kinds of add-ons and snake oil over the years. He hadn't heard of them at the time. By golly, it put three extra horses to the wheels.

This was before I gapped the sparkplugs out another .040 and couldn't take it out of line. He offered to dyno it again after I gapped them just to see how much it helped, but I never got around to it. It got even "punchier" after I did.

I used to drive it through the Ozark hills down Highway 65 every day. It made a big difference.

The Mexican beetle already has a high energy electronic ignition system with a HEI coil & all the trimmings.

Without opening up the engine and increasing displacement about all you can do is increase timning a couple degrees (will need the diagnostic material for this) and bolt on a set of 1.25 ratio rockers. A header with a single quiet muffler will rid you of the restrictive stock cross over pipe arrangement but you will need one with an oxygen sensor bung in the collector.

No, I don't want to open up the engine as i've never had a second of trouble with her and don't want to open the door to any. I'm not a mechanic of any sort so I'm a bit out of my element here....do I have to increase the timing or can I simply bolt on a set of the 1.25 rockers? I have the sport muffler on already will a header take it a step further? Dr. Darby would you do any of this to yours?

If it's a fuel injected bug, the rockers aren't going to help without reprogramming. If it is FI, you may want to first check if your bug is delivering what it is supposed to deliver.

Yes it's fuel injected....
