View original topic: So the car was being weird today

Well, I convinced my parents to let my drive my Beetle to a party, only about 2 miles away. But I noticed the car was acting different. When leaving home, the car didn't want to rev up smoothly. I think that's because my car has none of the thermostaticly operated flaps installed, it was cold outside, and I didn't let it idle to warm up before I set off. All else was normal, until I had to climb a hill. It is fairly steep, but I had to keep my foot on the floor at 55 MPH in 4th gear to keep my speed up. But it had pulled an even steeper hill just before in second gear just fine. So leaving the party, the car wouldn't start. Somehow the wire from coil to the distributor had come off the coil (stupid fucking cheap replacement thing, knew I should've bought a Bosch). So the car fired right up, and it warmed up for about 5 minutes. Drove home fine, still with a bit of hesitation on hills. And it wanted to die at about half the stop signs I stopped at. Just replaced the vacuum can on the dizzy, timed it, and adjusted the carb. New plug wires and plugs. Any suggestions? It wasn't doing this when I drove it last. Wow that was long...

Damn, I gotta get the defroster and heater hooked up. Had to de-frost the windshield with a rag and drive with the window down for half the trip. Any tips on keeping the windshield clear without the defroster?

I've heard that VW specific coils have different resistances then general one size fits all coils, and may toast points. Maybe check the points?

That may be it, but I checked the coil against some resistance numbers on here, and everything checked out good. It has been a while since I gapped the points though...maybe I need to re-gap them?

it could just be running like crap because it's cold. you said the drive's only about 2 miles...
