Got a new project. on aug 29th
Bought it from a friend who did a bunch of halfass work on it. Its a 66 with a hacked in dash clip and rag clip, rag actually looks good just needs a little clean up.

The plans are still up in the air. Basically I am going to do my best to fix shit and make it a nice, safe driver but still be real low and somewhat nice to look at.
Going to document the build as this is going to be for sell and I dont want anything to be hidden.

So I picked this up about a month ago thing needs a LOT of work
The cb 2" beam was fucked, he pulled the bottom adjuster out to go lower :banghead: Dash was never finished and just had bondo smeared everywhere.

I helped him clip the front 6 years ago and he never ground down the welds or anything, he then cut slits in the front so the beam would fit and later ran into a curb and pushed the apron back again.
So I cut the beam down to 5.5" and fixed the front the best I could, still gotta clean up the welds and paint the front

Got some new doors so I could replace the gay ass one piece windows
Started stripping the hood so that I can paint it to match

Started cleaning up the dash and inside the hood I figured I would fill the 2 extra vents (70s dash)

He did some fucked up shit in the vents

So I did the best I could to clean them up and used a stiff silicone to fill the imperfections, I will redo it later with something better

today I finished up the dash, after MANY hours hand sanding then spreading new mud and sanding more I finally got the dash smoothed out

Sold the rims off. I am just going to run black stocks no caps and maybe ports
Stripped the paint off the hood, primered and painted

Pulled the engine. Engine had a bunch of end play so it will not be going back in. Also my friend has something wrong with him. The engine has all new tins but he decided it would be smarter to weld the fan shroud to the head tins rather than just use bolts

Luckily he cant weld for dook so one side broke off no problem the other side needed a little cutoff wheel persuasion

I will pull the badass little 1500 outta the bus and put it in the bug, so whoever buys it will have a good engine and an extra 1500 (just in case)

Got my nosecone and hockey stick from JD/saltydog (Badass mofo BTW) and my tranny mounts from Detroit Johnny

Filled the top holes for the bumpers, running euros. And painted the front Gotta save some paint and see if I have enough to do the inside as well

Took the pedals apart and cleaned/painted them Also doglegged the clutch pedal so the dimmer switch will not be blocked

The tunnel hole was drilled in the wrong spot so I cut it out and welded in a section from another tunnel also made a plate to bolt the pedals to the floor

I did the pie cut

only went 3/4"
Still gonna ad a strap around it for more strength

Replaced the top

And started on the tranny raise

Hole was cut in the tunnel so I made a flap

Thats it for now

Great work!

It looks like you'll be much better to the car then your friend. Based on the stuff you said about him, he sounds like a real douche. :P

Keep it up Chase!

I guess I sound too harsh, every time I work on the car I see something else to fix so I get mad.
HE is a real good guy/friend just needs to slow down a little and do stuff right the first time. Or not work on cars.

i love how the roller pedal is a skateboard wheel  good luck with the car...looks good so far!

These are the forumns that I dig the most and seeing the progress pics is awesome. Hats off to you buddy and keep your "friend" away from any other poor VWs out there! Keep up the good work.

so Chase how much will the pie-cut give you? is there a conversion, like you went 3/4 so that is how much drop.
looks awseome man, keep it up

cage66 Sun Nov 01, 2009 6:28 pm

Im sure there is a way of figuring it out.
I started with 1/2" at the top but it didnt go as far as I wanted so I cut a little more. Its just under 1.5" more clearance to the beam.
Almost like just having a LP beam in but I gained the extra caster too
Thanks, if I was working or start working soon I will just keep it for a while. This is going to be a fun ride when done

Nice work, bro. So with the caster the pie-cut gives you, you won't need any shims right?

cage66 Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:18 am

Yeah that is also an advantage to it. As long as I measured off everything good it should track straight real nice and handle a little better than other slammed vws

dubtype1 Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:27 am

Sounds good. Thanks for posting up, you've helped me in the past and present with your "progress threads", thank you.

Now get back to work!

Thanks, glad to hear it
Not much of a productive day but I made a threaded plate and a bracket for clutch/brake stop Not sure what a stock one looks like but this works good

Question about the pie cut,,,,,,,, Does this cause clearance issues with the fuel tank or tie rods?

deluxekombi67 Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:32 pm

I love abandoned projects....as long as some of the mods you like. Me id love to find a similar car that was rag clipped and rhd clipped....save me the headache of butchering a car to make something i always wanted! How hard is it to narrow that beam? I have a perfect used one sitting doing nothing and want to narow one for my 73..... :?:

Endicott jb Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:37 pm

Narrowing a beam isn't too hard. Just read and ask a lot of questions.

here's the link I used.

Tierods are fine the gas tank with either need to be raised a little or clearanced underneath. Also I may need to run a U joint for the steering box but I mocked it up and seems like it will still wok.
Prolly going to shorten the steering column a little though since it pushed it out a little
