Where can I get the proper puller to take the rear drums off a 79 superbeetle? I've got a few pullers but none of them will do the trick.

First off, did you adjust the pads in as far as they would go so they are not binding? I don't mean to come off as a know it all, but I tried to take the drums off with out adjusting them in, and I had to beat the drum off with a hammer

You can also drill the pin backs off, for the shoe hold downs. The shoes should collapse together and the drum should slide off

I haven't done anything with it yet other than remove the big castle nut. I was reading in my Bug for dummies book and they were showing a large puller that bolted to the drum. So if I loosen the shoes up I should be able to remove them?

Backing the shoes off is just routine, sometimes there too tight and holding the drum so always back them off and if the drum is then stuck at least you then know that its not the shoes holding it on only thing left is the spline d shaft and you might find it easier to rent or buy a slap hammer as opposed to a actual drum puller.

I've never had to use a drum puller (good thing: I don't have one); however, I'm in Arizona, not too much rust here. Definitely back off the brake adjustment, you may have worn a ridge into the drum inner surface. When my rear brake locked up a few years ago, I did "drive" to free it up before I took it apart to fix it.
