Anybody actually done the procedure? There are some posts about it, but wondered if any Samba members had completed it. Just picked up a running '80 2.0 and pretty stoked about getting it done.

Thanks for any info.

The long block is going to be pretty much the same except for the breather. Are you in California? If so I have no idea what kind of problems you will have with the different breather if you have to pass a visual.

when you set the smog up, it will have to meet 1980 standards if you are in California. Later of the VIN or engine. Be sure you get all the FI stuff too. ALL OF IT including exhaust.

Thanks for the replies. Not in California, the bus is a '79 california model (not Federal) with a catalytic converter. It's all stock, FI - has the State of California sticker on it. I am in Indiana. Got it 3 years ago in Detroit.

It should not be a big deal if the vanagon is also a CA model. No series resister on the CA set ups + different double relay as you are aware.

The way the heaterboxes deliver heat is different so if you can get the heaterboxes on the vanagon donor engine that would be a plus.

No, you'll need the bus heater boxes. If you were going to use the vanagon heater boxes, you'd also need to use the vanagon shroud/tin; which don't fit. You'll need everythiing "bus" except the vanagon long block and breather. Also, you'll need to drill out the bus engine mount brackets to fit the larger mount bolts of the vanagon engine.

Pnocean, try a search with my name as poster, this has been covered many times.
